The 3 Things They Don't Tell You About Being a Financial Advisor... When I talk to recent college graduates or new financial advisors, they often have a picture of what the advisor career path looks like. Those who have family or close friends in the industry may have already seen first-hand the amazing things that can be accomplished in this career. But for most people, like myself, we never interacted with a financial advisor until we became one ourselves. That leaves space to come up with a lot of guesstimates and ideas based on movies and preconceived notions. Some of those ideas become deterrents for many to even consider becoming a financial advisor. Historically these stereotypes are one of the multiple reasons why women are less likely to choose this career path. I wish someone explained this to me when I was starting. So here they are..... The three things they don’t tell you about being a financial advisor : ✴ It has nothing to do with numbers: A common misconception is that you must be good at math or financial equations to be a successful advisor. False. Some of the best financial advisors I have ever met came from communications or arts backgrounds. Don’t let the fear of numbers deter you from considering this career. Today, more than ever, we have programs, tools, and automated processes that will do that tedious number crunching for you. What technology can’t do is build compassionate relationships with your clients. ✴ You become an emotional confidant and family counselor: As a new advisor, one of the first things you notice is how much emotion is connected to your client’s finances. Helping someone secure their life’s savings is a big deal and they are entrusting it to you. I have had many clients share with me deeply personal issues and family troubles because you are there to help them navigate some of the most difficult transitions in their lives. Although we are not trained counselors, a big part of our role is providing emotional support and security. ✴ Exponential flexibility: I can only count on one hand the number of careers that afford you the extreme amount of flexibility you can have as a financial advisor. To be clear, when you are starting you will have to put in your hours, but when you establish your book of business the opportunities are endless. It is not unheard of for an advisor to be producing over a million dollars while only working 20 hours a week. I know advisors who take months off at a time, with a team to support them while they are away. Not to mention, you can choose which clients you want to work with and decide how often you want to meet. That allows you to spend more time with your family and have a fulfilling life outside of work. This can be one of the most rewarding careers out there. More relevant today than ever.

How I went from 0 to 600M+ client assets in 7 years as a Financial Advisor I was just a few weeks into my new career, already working 80+ hrs per week, and only having a slim chance to make it all work. It was like driving a car while fixing the engine and trying to manage the constant fear of crashing. On top of that, repeated rejection, even from a very dear and trusted friend which almost destroyed all my hope. I thought to myself “If he won’t meet with me, why would anyone else?” All the while I was seeing other new financial advisors (FAs) drop like flies from being overwhelmed, full of fear, and not getting clients quick enough. It was a very lonely time. Fast forward to today, May 2024, I have over $600M of assets under management and hundreds of clients. Even my friend who once flat out rejected me is a client now. My life is no longer dominated by perpetual fear, scarcity and stress. Instead I’ve had time to start a family (two boys and a baby girl on the way) and grow my practice faster than ever before. Here’s a few lessons I’ve learned along the way: - I programmed myself to say “NEXT” extremely often. Any rejection, any hold-up, I empowered myself to keep moving forward regardless of circumstances. - I learned to love the NO’s because I was that much closer to the next YES. That’s my way of reminding myself that part of building a client base is purely a numbers game and nothing to take personally. - I found mentors and hired a coach. Wisdom that takes decades to learn was distilled into minutes of discussion which helped me avoid big mistakes and recover when I hit hard times. - I equipped myself with modern approaches. The world changed a lot during my time coming up and it's changing faster still, relying solely on the traditional approaches was only going to get me so far. Using technology, social media, and advanced prospecting strategies were all a part of my evolution. To other FA’s reading, I hope this struck a chord or shifted your thinking. This journey is no picnic, but it's infinitely better when we learn from each other.
