I'd like to add one critical aspect to this encouraging article: the recognition that fewer students than we'd like will sign up for college-level personal finance courses without early financial education (i.e., during Middle and High School). We don’t start any other subject “in the middle”! We learn the alphabet and then how to read. We learn our numbers and then how to do math. What comes before budgeting or choosing a financial institution? For far too many citizens – very little! Yet, mastery of the basics gives students the confidence and appetite to learn more about any subject; why would personal finance be any different? Our money personalities (the habits and beliefs we have about money) are primarily established by adolescence. This is why it is so important to give school-aged children positive money management experiences; their money personalities are still in development. Early financial education primes the demand pump for the more sophisticated financial information today's students will need later in life when it is relevant and helpful. For example, mindful spending is an incredibly easy-to-learn but powerful life skill that allows young people to experience first-hand that anyone can get and use financial information to improve their lives. Anyone can learn to be good with money. Childhood financial legacy is not destiny. But if you want to help the young people in your midst embrace all the terrific personal finance content that is increasingly available to them in high school, college, and beyond, make sure you give them the ABCs or 123s of money – in other words, please teach them to think before they buy. #TeachKidsAboutMoney #GiveMoneySmartz #FinancialLiteracy

Most fascinating thing about the rise of college personal finance courses isn't that they're happening. It's that traditional universities are - by force or choice - incrementally behaving more like the vocational schools they will tell you they are unique and different from. I think that our education curriculum needs to be revamped so that it becomes more practical to the real world. I wish I had known things like basic tax, stockvels, insurance, mortgages, credit scores, investments including platforms like Easy Equities at school. Berkeley, for instance, saw close to 900 students enrolling in a comprehensive course that delves into career planning and the psychological aspects of finance. Dartmouth's personal finance class is designed with non-finance majors in mind, while Stanford's program delves into intricate subjects like stock option valuation and investment portfolio diversification. This is a trend I can get behind! Not only would an increase in financial literacy be helpful for the individual, it would have major impacts on the macro economic health of the US. I’d love to see some basics on budgeting in middle school, build to an understanding of taxes in high school with some understanding of long term investing, and then bring on the curriculum on college campuses discussed here. https://ow.ly/BrPI50UJ2js

Colleges are catching up to what 26 states have already started to implement in core curriculums across the country. Personal finance education is a "rising tide" that lifts the economic prospects of individuals at all income and education levels. From a basic understanding of behavioral economics all the way to long term investing, a more financially literate populace will bring about stronger economies, stronger families, and long term growth in all sectors. Let's make PF as ubiquitous as english, math, and science. Wealth building starts with the individual.

The goal, Michael Boskin, a Stanford economist said, is to get students to understand how to think and reason their way through financial decisions. Stanford’s course covers basics like borrowing and credit scores, and investing principles such as diversification, or managing risk by investing in different types of assets. Students analyze various scenarios, such as choosing between investments and citing the reasons for their choice, and discuss the impact of taxes, fees and inflation on investment returns. There really is a need among all students, and society as a whole, to learn more about personal finance,” said J. Daniel Chi, chairman of the finance department at U.N.LV.’s Lee Business School. “It turns out it’s a very good vehicle for teaching basic economics,” John Y.
