I was part of another great training program with #igfmining last week. This time with the Mining Commission in Tanzania. We covered mine closure and environmental management and had a really informative mine tour to Shanta Gold’s Singida Mine. A dedicated and knowledgeable group of trainees. Thanks to my colleagues Carlos Alberto Ortega and Thelma Halim.

Dear Colleagues – I am running for re-election as a Director of the #pdac. Please consider voting for me. Over the past three years I have been an active board member supporting the development of a new strategic plan and helping to steer the organization through the challenges of COVID. I am co-chair of the Finance and Taxation committee and a member of the convention planning committee. I bring almost two decades of Board-level experience with industry associations, geoscience agencies, Indigenous training organizations and post-secondary education. I have a strong background in mining policy in areas such as geoscience, land use, taxation, permitting and environmental management both in Canada and internationally in South America and Africa. It would be an honour to continue to serve as a Director of the #PDAC. Please feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss how I can support the PDAC and its members.

I spent a productive week delivering a mine closure training course for the government of Thailand for #igfmining. Great participation and ideas generated by government officials from several departments. We also had a chance to view some of the reclamation work and closure plan at a limestone quarry north of Bangkok. Thanks to Murtiani Hendriwardani from the IGF and Kridtaya Sakamornsnguan from the Ministry of Primary Industries and Mines.

The #IGFMining has just released a new report on Integrating Gender Equality and Mine closure written by myself and my colleague Ege Tekinbas. We summarize key aspects of mine closure and gender equality and mining, and then examine where they intersect. The report includes recommendations and actions that governments can take to ensure that gender considerations are integrated into all aspects of mine closure including community engagement, post-mining land use decisions, the transition of mine workers and those in the service and supply sector, and community, social, and economic support for closure and the post-mining transition.
