Navigational Challenges and Solutions at Khor Al-Zubair Port Addressed Shipping Arabia, June 6, 2024 — In a focused effort to enhance maritime safety and streamline navigational efficiency, the Maritime Affairs Department of Iraq Ports held a critical meeting to address the navigational challenges at Khor Al-Zubair port. Dr. Farhan Al-Fartousi, General Manager of Iraq Ports, chaired the session under the guidance of His Excellency, Minister of Transport Razzaq Al-Saadawi. The primary discussion centered around the difficulties faced due to the narrowness of the channel at the submerged tunnel point and the single-lane ship passage to Khor Al-Zubair port and the adjacent liquid gas berth. The session convened marine pilots and port captains, highlighting collaborative efforts to optimize the navigational processes and ensure seamless maritime operations. Participants outlined the necessity of a strategic approach to manage the reduced channel width of 200 meters near the submerged tunnel construction site. They emphasized the importance of precise navigational advisory operations, considering the impact of strong water currents and high wind speeds on ship movements. The meeting resulted in the implementation of enhanced navigational strategies to facilitate the safe and orderly passage of vessels, particularly focusing on mitigating risks associated with the restricted navigational space. These measures are critical in maintaining the port’s operational integrity and safety standards. This initiative is part of a broader commitment by the Iraq Ports Authority to uphold and enhance maritime safety while supporting the continuous development of its port facilities. The collaborative effort of the Maritime Affairs Department ensures that Khor Al-Zubair remains a vital hub for maritime trade, capable of accommodating the dynamic demands of modern maritime operations. This development is being spearheaded by the Marine Control and Guidance Department and the Marine Affairs Department, in collaboration with the Grand Faw Port Authority. Dr. Engineer Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the Iraqi Ports, detailed the project’s progress, noting that the efforts align with directives from the Minister of Transport, Mr. Razzaq Muhibis Al-Saadawi.
