Batteries have already taken over the world of electronics and the drop in price and rise in quality mark their way to our cars, ships, planes and storage for all other industries. The below RMI article shows in a few graphs how a concentrated effort to lower prices while quality keeps ticking up paves the way for batteries to take center stage as an energy source. There is much value in the transition and how the new batteries can allow us to better use our renewable energy sources. In the long run, battery energy storage would be a critical stepping stone to freeing ourselves from reliance on fossil fuels energy sources. #batterytechnology #energystorage #renewableenergy #batteries David Schatsky Dilip Krishna Arod Balissa Jon Creyts Rushad Nanavatty Pascal Hartmann Dr. Daniel Barrera-Medrano Dr. Michal Vakrat Wolkin Moshiel Biton Marcus Clover Roee Furman Maya Ben Dror, PhD

Battery Makers Counteract EV Slowdown With Energy Storage Boom Summary: Battery manufacturers are facing a challenging year due to a slowdown in electric vehicle (EV) sales growth, leading to reduced battery volumes, intense competition, and price cuts to maintain market share. Despite this, the stationary energy storage market is experiencing a significant boom, with installations expected to rise by 61% this year. This surge is driven by a 43% drop in prices for turnkey energy storage systems and increasing demand for renewable energy integration. The stationary storage market is becoming a more substantial part of global battery demand, with its share rising from 6% in 2020 to an expected 13% in 2024. Notably, in China, energy storage applications have overtaken consumer electronics as the second-largest application for battery production. This shift is reflected in Tesla's latest results, where energy storage deployments more than doubled in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the first quarter. The energy storage market is increasingly focused on energy-shifting applications, such as price arbitrage and integrating renewables, which now account for two-thirds of all storage installations. This trend is supported by provincial mandates in China requiring wind and solar projects to be paired with energy storage. The global solar PV industry is also contributing to this growth, with record-breaking installations expected this year. As the stationary storage market continues to grow rapidly, battery manufacturers are exploring new markets and creative solutions, such as residential energy storage systems designed for balconies in Europe. This shift highlights the industry's adaptability in response to changing market dynamics, with the stationary storage market emerging as a crucial component of the energy transition. #EnergyStorage #BatteryIndustry #EVMarket #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #LithiumIonBatteries #SolarPV #CleanEnergy #BatteryManufacturing #EnergyShift #GridStorage #ClimateAction

BATTERY MANAGEMENT: Adden Energy says lithium metal #batteries can now charge quickly at room temp Developer of solid-state batteries Adden Energy has announced that its lithium metal batteries can now maintain extreme fast charging (XFC) of less than 10 minutes at room temperature. William Fitzhugh, CEO of Adden Energy, said, "Our technology makes #EV charging as fast as gas, so you can recharge using public infrastructure on your lunch break or on the way home from work.” “Our porous anode technologies allow high cathode loadings in excess of 4mAh/cm2 and our multi-electrolyte separators completely stop dendrites from forming even at such high current densities,” explained Luhan Ye, CTO of Adden Energy. Adden Energy co-founder and chairman, Xin Li, added, “The significance of simultaneously maintaining commercial-level cathode loadings, a lithium metal anode, room-temperature operation and 10-minute charge cannot be overstated.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e8Fnx_UG #Automotive #Powertrain #PowertrainMag #Engineering #AutomotiveEngineering #AutomotiveDesign #Sustainability #ElectricVehicles #EV #Testing #Technology #Transportation #AutoTestExpo #GACS

Battery makers and cell manufacturers have faced a tough 2024 thus far, with falling margins and revenues due to slower-than-expected worldwide sales of electric vehicles (EVs), reducing volumes. However, BloombergNEF (BNEF) reports that the stationary storage market has risen 61%, and prices for turnkey systems are down 43% from 2023, which is part of driving that deployment. In April, the figure was at a record low of $115/kWh for two-hour energy storage systems. By looking at the annual lithium-ion battery output from Chinese manufacturers and assigning them an application, stationary energy storage overtook consumer electronics as the second-largest application for battery production. The global stationary energy storage market almost tripled in 2023. #battery #storage #bess

[LG Energy Solution rolls out 1st battery cell at Tennessee plant] LG batteries to power GM's latest EVs, including Cadillac Lyriq LG Energy Solution said Tuesday that it has delivered the first battery cells produced at Ultium Cells’ manufacturing plant in Tennessee to its client. The battery products made at the Tennessee site will be loaded onto 제너럴모터스’ third-generation electric vehicles, including the Cadillac Lyriq. The Tennessee plant is the second battery production site of Ultium Cells, a joint venture between LG Energy Solution and General Motors. According to LG Energy Solution, the first battery rollout came two and a half years after the joint venture began the construction of the plant. Having committed a $2.3 billion investment in the Tennessee site, the companies plan to expand the annual production capacity in phases to 50 gigawatt-hours eventually, which will be enough to power about 600,000 EVs that can drive over 500 kilometers per charge. LG Energy Solution did not disclose the current capacity of the Tennessee site. Tap below to read full story. #LG #Tennessee #EnergySolution #newsite #EV #GM #GeneralMotors https://lnkd.in/gX5up5Ny
