I recently visited the Victoria and Albert Museum for 'Tropical Modernism - Architecture and Independence'. The exhibition focuses on the decolonisation of British territories, particularly in terms of a kind of 'handover' of responsibilities in the built environment - impacting on architecture and sustainability in these hot countries leaving British rule. This called to mind some Passivhaus concepts and even the controversial and complex Future Homes Standards that have kept builders on their toes since 2016, promising all new builds to be up to 80% more energy-efficient by 2025. It's interesting to see that a few of the tried and true methods on show are being revived, despite most of the practices being abandoned decades ago. With global temperatures on a rapid rise, will we see more of these old zero carbon practices being tweaked for modern use or are we approaching a 'too hot to handle' scenario? #builtEnvironment #architecture #exhibition

How did the built environment come into being? Along with the emergence of civilisation, I realised that architecture has always been a part of our history; not plain shelter, not protection against the natural forces but the art of architecture. Our nomadic lifestyle was replicated in the Inuit's makeshift dwellings, crafted from natural elements, and the Mongolian yurts' tent-like structures. Architecture encouraged permanent settlements in Çatalhöyük, Turkey where interconnected mud brick housing promoted community living. With religion, architecture was indelibly shaped to accommodate spiritual evolution and the Hagia Sophia, initially built as a cathedral transformed into a mosque and later converted to a museum symbolises the religious influence on architecture. The Industrial Revolution reshaped rapid construction techniques for mass production. The Crystal Palace in London featured a cast iron and plate glass structure utilising modular design. The invention of the elevator made way for vertical expansion with The Equitable Life Building in New York City being the spatial experiment. In the present-day scenario, how can we carry this history forward not just as case studies but to inform modern-day architecture? #historyofarchitecture #lessonsfromhistory #worldarchitecture #monumentalarchitecture #architecture #design #ArchitectureAndDesign

Glaciers are facing an unprecedented crisis, with catastrophic consequences for the global climate and human communities. It is crucial that immediate and collective measures are taken to mitigate climate change. There are many architectural studios active in the fight against climate change through collaborative projects with institutions and local communities. Numerous projects involve assistance and protest, but also research and art, capable of using poetic languages to avert the worst. The Ice Age is a theme that explores places at the edges of the world where human life reaches extreme conditions, and where climate change threatens human survival. Why Demolish When You Can Reimagine? Adaptive reuse is a sustainable alternative to demolition that transforms aging structures into functional, modern spaces while retaining their character. Drawbacks in Demolition; Produces massive amounts of waste. Erases cultural and architectural history. Requires more energy for new construction. Rewards in Adaptive Reuse; Protects the environment by reducing waste. Offers creative freedom to blend old and new. Preserves a sense of place and community identity. Reviving Art in Architecture: A Look at France's '1% for Art' Policy This Policy is intended to bring new life into architecture by integrating art seamlessly into public spaces. This innovative approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of buildings but also fosters cultural growth and appreciation. By allocating this small percentage of construction budgets to art installations, France has set a precedent for other countries to prioritize art in urban development. This strategy promotes creativity, stimulates local economies, and enriches the daily lives of residents and visitors alike. Of course... some applications are better than others. #artintegration #culturaldevelopment #art #architecture #investing #lifestyle #220dots

The Federal Minister of Housing, Urban Development and Building, #Klara_Geywitz, has announced the curators for the German contribution to the 19th #Architecture #Biennale in #Venice. A commission of nine experts has selected and commissioned the “STRESSTEST” team consisting of Prof. elisabeth endres, Technische Universität Braunschweig, Prof. Dr. Daniele Santucci, Climateflux GmbH and RWTH Aachen University, Nicola Borgmann, Architekturgalerie München, and Prof. Gabriele G. Kiefer, TU Braunschweig. peter cachola schmal, Director of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) Frankfurt and Chairman of the Expert Commission: “Is it really necessary to revisit climate change and the associated warming of our living environments? Obviously, because we are not showing the urgent need to prioritize our actions. The team around Elisabeth Endres and Daniele Santucci will bring the topic to life in an exciting way and at the same time offer solutions to Carlo Ratti's motto of the 19th Biennale Architettura 2025 ‘Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective.' with an answer.” The “STRESSTEST” team is addressing the issue of adapting our built environment to overheating. #Overheating in our cities and natural environments is already having life-threatening consequences for people, animals and plants. Infrastructure such as roads, bridges and buildings are suffering considerable structural damage due to extreme heat. In the future, temperatures will reach levels that are far beyond the bearable. With its proposal for the 19th Architecture Biennale 2025, the curatorial team wants to convey the urgency of this topic and make it tangible. How does heat affect our lives in public spaces? How can we protect ourselves against heat and implement climate-adapted urban development? Save the Date: The 19th Architecture Biennale in Venice Title: “Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective” Exhibition period: May 10 to November 23, 2025

The design and implementation of my generator embodies Deleuzian concepts by reimagining space as fluid and multiplicitous. Similar to Deleuze's notion of rhizomatic structures, where connections proliferate horizontally rather than hierarchically, our technology fosters interconnectedness within urban environments. Through its adaptive nature, the system embodies Deleuze's idea of becoming, constantly transforming and evolving in response to its surroundings. By embracing these philosophical principles, my flooring system transcends its function, becoming a dynamic force for reshaping urban landscapes and fostering sustainable futures. #Graphene #architecture #sustainability
