What does it mean when we "center" something? I had a fascinating discussion this week with a doctoral student about the concept of patient-centered care, and it turns out that the term still needs to be fully operationalized. Conceptual models exist, which helps somewhat, but there still needs to be definitional clarity about the essential meaning. Likewise, client-centered, student-centered, and customer-centered care are vague terms that reflect our intuitions and assumptions about what that centering looks like, not robust research about it. Given that, how do we teach new practitioners about the idea? Should we be teaching it? How are we measuring outcomes if we need clarification on our interventions? What exactly is being centered, by whom, and how?

Pride Moment: My Wife's Journey to Becoming an Outstanding Researcher As a public health lecturer, I've always believed in empowering others to reach their full potential. And what better way to do that than with my own wife?! When she started a nursing degree in the UK, her colleagues would often say, "You're so lucky to have a lecturer as a husband! He can do all your assignments for you!" But that's not how I roll. Instead, I mentored her, explained how to approach her essays, and let her learn. And, did she learn! She aced her dissertation with distinction, and I couldn't be prouder! Since then, she's been following in my footsteps, collaborating with me on research papers. And now, she's the lead author of our latest paper, "Nursing in the Digital Age: Harnessing Telemedicine for Enhanced Patient Care"! This paper is a game-changer, exploring the transformative power of telemedicine in nursing practice. From teletriage to virtual visits, we uncover the vast possibilities and challenges of this technology. I'm beaming with pride, not just because my wife is the lead author, but because she's proven that with hard work and determination, anyone can achieve greatness. If I had done her assignments and dissertation for her, she wouldn't be where she is today. Lesson learned: Empower others to succeed, and they'll soar to heights you never thought possible! Advancing health equity is a key pillar in improving quality. The Quality Improvement Experiential Student Training program (QuEST) and one of it’s notable projects “Closing the gap on healthcare quality for equity-deserving groups: a scoping review of equity-focused quality improvement interventions in medicine” was recently highlighted in an article by the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, “Making health care quality improvement more equitable”. The article underscores the study’s focus on how quality improvement work impacts equity-seeking groups and touches on how inadvertent health disparities can come of interventions that may exclude some groups. Healing is possible | Co-founder, Numocore School of Medicine and Consciousness | Emergency Physician
Imagine a school where medical students, residents, nurses, and attending physicians can learn deeper models of human #anatomy and understand the principles and practices of healing, going beyond the current understanding of integrative medicine, yet making it accessible to all in a shorter time. Imagine a school where #wellness professionals can learn the science of medicine, the strengths and limitations of the medical model, and the deeper philosophy and practice of #healing that connects all systems. Now imagine that they are the same school. What will follow is a shift from the current state of healthcare and wellness to a focus on healing together from the individual to the planetary scale. This will be the transition to the future health and healing system of the world based in and sustained by our natural intelligence. Yeah, we can do that. 🛣️ Not all roads lead to Rome when it comes to healthcare interventions! 🏛️ We’ve just published a new commentary on intervention skills. While past research has largely focused on teaching future clinicians how to diagnose accurately, we’re asking a critical question: How do we teach them to treat patients appropriately? 🧠👩🏽⚕️ Diagnoses aim for one right answer, but interventions are far more complex and context-dependent. Different situations call for different approaches, and that’s where the real challenge lies. In our latest research, Prof. Dr. Ralf Schmidmaier, Vitaliy Popov, Johann Schredelseker, Frank Fischer, Martin Fischer, and I explore this gap in understanding intervention skills and offer a new conceptual framework for advancing research—both within and beyond healthcare. 👉 Read more about what basic research questions need to be addressed so that we can learn how to equip future clinicians with the skills they need to navigate the complexity of interventions! #healthcare #research #interventionskills #medicaleducation #healthcareinnovation

✍ As the author of this study, I'm thrilled to share our findings on the effectiveness of simulation in developing socioemotional skills in healthcare. Our study has been published in the Q1 Clinical Nursing Simulation journal. 🎯 Throughout the research, we delved deeply into how simulation can positively impact the acquisition of crucial socioemotional skills for the healthcare sector. 📊 During this process, we meticulously analyzed 7 systematic reviews, examining a total of 88 studies and involving 8658 participants. 🔑 Our study's results reveal that simulation emerges as an effective tool for training students and healthcare professionals in key areas such as communication, self-efficacy, and self-confidence. 📚 If you'd like to delve deeper into our work, I invite you to check out the full article via this link: https://lnkd.in/dBWg4QHY #Research #Simulation #Healthcare #Education #ScientificPost #MedicalEducation #HealthTech #HealthScience #Simulationtraining #Patientsimulation #Nursing #Communication #Selfefficacy #Highfidelity #ProfessionalDevelopment
