Google has launched the Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer (AMIE), a chatbot designed to engage in diagnostic conversations with patients, exhibiting reasoning akin to human doctors. Google Research leaders Alan Karthikesalingam and Vivek Natarajan emphasized the significance of AI in improving healthcare accessibility and quality through enhanced physician-patient communication. AMIE underwent training on real-world medical datasets, employing a self-play-based simulated diagnostic dialogue environment for development. In evaluations with simulated patients, AMIE demonstrated diagnostic conversations comparable to board-certified primary care physicians, outperforming in accuracy and various consultation aspects. While promising, the researchers acknowledged limitations and called for further research before real-world implementation.

Typical non-medical #AI systems get updated and retrained on a *daily* basis – via a simple "push to prod" – but an update to an AI *medical device* could trigger costly and time consuming regulatory reviews, taking months to years to deploy. While understandable due to the safety implications of the medical domain, this process has in effect resulted in unnecessarily slow pace of development, lack of interest from innovators to build AI medical devices, and limited patient access to quality care. The #FDA has been trying to change this and just last month published a 41 page draft guidance for what they call "Predetermined Change Control Plans for Medical Devices" (PCCP). I've been meaning to read this (rather long) document for a few weeks and finally found a fun way to get started! I used Google's new #NotebookLM experiment to generate an AI podcast in which two lively hosts explore the topic and provide what I believe is a pretty great summary in ~12 minutes. Give it a listen for yourself. I think this summarization technology is really great for these types of use cases.
