We are walking the walk when it comes to innovation and sustainability and are constantly looking for ways to do better. To celebrate World Environment Day, let’s have a look at some 2023 achievements: 🌱 We continue our journey to meet the global, industry and EU carbon neutrality objectives of 2050, as today 60.9% of our total energy consumption comes from green electricity. ☀️ We installed solar panels at 12 different sites, including Altona, Australia, and Vitry-en-Charollais, France. Our goal is to double our total capacity within 3 years. 🇫🇷 In France, at our plasterboard plant in Auneuil, we installed a new dryer that reduces CO2 emissions by 5,900 tonnes, accounting for 20% of site emissions. In addition, we implemented 15% recycled gypsum in our operations and signed a partnership to generate energy from residual waste rather than using natural gas. 💧 Also in Auneuil, we increased rainwater storage capacity by 30%, securing 50% of our total water supply from rainwater. 🌼 We conducted the first extensive biodiversity data collection in our quarries, including species and habitats inventories, the presence of protected areas, impact assessments and planned management actions. Is there a new blue star on the construction horizon? Our colleague Tabea Nafz attended Building Green DK event this week, which showcased many interesting perspectives on where the building sector is heading. While recycled and “greener” land-based materials were all around, an alternative blue biomass caught her interest. Bio-based regenerative materials from the ocean such as seaweed and seagrass possess unique ‘fire-proof’ and insulation functionalities while at the same time absorbing carbon from the atmosphere and increasing biodiversity in our oceans. The link between sustainability & performance as a necessity in order to scale, was one key takeaways from the panel debate around “Build with blue biomass”. Rumors spread that the Copenhagen metro line M5 which has a CO2 reduction target of 50% compared to the M4 might introduce some of these new materials to reach their sustainability goals. 👀🚉 Tabea Nafz shared to nlmtd (DK) how was nice it was to see that the talks are shifting from only focusing on climate to more emphasis on biodiversity. An interesting panel debate by idverde DK “Naturen i byen 2050” tackled the topic of how we can invite nature back into our (city) lives. While there are many different paths, one thing is for sure: We need to prioritize space for nature to grow! We cannot wait to see a more green Copenhagen with buildings based on new, regenerative materials where people can re-connect back to their surroundings, both to nature and people! 🌱🌊🏢 #futureproofcities #humanisinginnovation #buildinggreen

💡 Did you know? More than two billion people lack access to waste collection, and over three billion are without controlled waste recovery or disposal facilities. (UNDP) This alarming statistic is a wake-up call for urgent action. On this year’s World Cleanup Day, we are excited to share that the event has now been added to the official United Nations Calendar of International Days & Weeks from 2024 onwards! This is a major milestone, bringing even more global focus to the issue of waste mismanagement. Today, in the city of Tromsø, Norway, the inaugural event will highlight the theme “Arctic Cities and Marine Litter,” focusing on the impacts of waste on one of the most fragile ecosystems on Earth. With the support of UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), GRID-Arendal, and the Norwegian Retailers’ Environment Fund, the event aims to inspire communities worldwide to adopt sustainable practices that protect these critical regions. As the global generation of municipal solid waste is expected to grow from 2.1 billion tonnes in 2023 to 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050 (UNEP/Global Waste Management Outlook 2024), it's clear that without urgent action, we face an unsustainable future. This is not just an environmental crisis but a socio-economic one, as the direct cost of waste management could nearly double to a staggering USD 640.3 billion by 2050.
