BORDEAUX PRICES WILL HAVE TO GO DOWN. BORDEAUX PRICES WILL HAVE TO GO UP. Over the next few weeks, there will be lots of earnest discussion about how far 2024 Bordeaux prices should fall en primeur - and the distance prices of bottled top wines have already dropped on Liv-Ex. Chateau Petrus 2020 is apparently worth 30% less than it was a year ago... If this continues you might soon be able to get a bottle for under €3,000. Few if any of the people having this kind of discussion will give much thought to the *other* Bordeaux - the torrent of basic wine selling in bulk for less than €0.75 per bottle - prices that compete with Coca Cola and Red Bull. In other words, a single bottle of top Pomerol commands a price that is over 2,000 times higher than one sold in the same shape and size of bottle, bearing the name of a chateau on its label and made from grapes grown in vineyards a few kilometres away. It is easy to forget that there's more than one kind of Bordeaux

Why would anyone buy Gruyère or wine when you can get brand name droopy processed cheese and soda cheaper?

Like me up for all that cheap Petrus 🥴 sounds familiar… Chinese buyers are lining up to pay $0.80 / litre for Australian reds. Cheaper than bottled water.
