"Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don't want too" This quote from Richard Branson is something that has always stuck in my mind and since joining St. James’s Place it has never been so true. In my short time here I have seen so many examples of employees that have been given fantastic opportunities to learn new skills or develop existing ones. Opportunities in new roles, education outside of work and so much more. I can't wait to take advantage for myself and become a better version of me. Uisce Éireann Irish Water is a brillant place to learn huge array of things about water and wastewater and how we bring clean safe drinking water to 1.7 million homes and 178,000 businesses. We’re a regulated business with significant commitments to deliver a resilient water services. We’ve Customer teams, a huge Operations Team who have real challenges every day to keep the water flowing. We also deliver huge strategic programmes with over 8,000 different assets from reservoirs, to pumping station, water and wastewater treatment plants and a whopping 63,000 kilometres of water pipes, much of it old and in need of upgrade. Our graduates will be exposed to the science bit, hydreology, laboratory testing of water, how we build and manage vast amount of infrastructure, to energy and to the future using renewable energy sources. Uisce Éireann Irish Water use 20% of all electricity in the public sector, to keep all of our assets running. They will also learn about leakage, about communications, finance, corporate governance, regulation and the required HR Strategy and Safety Strategies, led by our People & Safety Director, Dawn O'Driscoll They will also learn about the complexity of IT transformation and the business services and systems needed to run a complex and growing business like ours. Would you speak truth to power if you believed your company values were being compromised? Would you call out behaviours that didn't walk the company talk? Would you proactively make those small everyday efforts to live what you espouse? Would you (heaven forbid!) make yourself uncomfortable in defence of your company culture? Forget culture-carrier, are you a culture-warrior? I hope I am. I know I want to be. And I want to be because I truly believe I belong. I love the quote referenced by Natalie Benjamin below "belonging is a wildly undervalued condition for human performance". It resonated with so many of us at our Christmas party because at Ivy House London we know what we belong to. We belong to a tribe, driven by a shared mission and values that are important and lived in many and varied ways: from the little to the large, from sparklers to uncomfortable conversations. One of my first jobs was for a company with strong values, ahead of its time in terms of shouting about them. I loved it. I belonged to something I believed in. Until I realised it was all shout and no action. Then I got truly disillusioned. So I left. I remember how much it mattered to me at the time. The disillusionment was real and deeply felt. For years I looked back on that time as an example of the damaging impact of company hypocracy on its employees. At no point did it occur to me that I had a role in how the culture was lived. I can understand why - I was young and had no idea there was a part I could play, let alone how to play it. As we grow and change and do even more awesome stuff in 2025, it would be naive to think there won't be times when I might have a choice; perhaps to lean into discomfort or turn a blind eye? I no longer have the excuse of being young or ill-equipped. I know that if I want that warm fuzzy fabulous feeling of truly belonging (still here this morning so can't just have been the Prosecco!) I have a part to play. And knowing how much my CEO loves fancy dress, I've got a whole year to plan my "culture warrior" costume! 🦏 😎🦏

Many more neural pathways were created today…….again (this is happening a lot since I rejoined Vistage UK as a Chair and I couldn’t be happier about that!). What a privilege to listen to these 3 extraordinary speakers, the big messages of today? 1. We can feel optimistic about the economy for the first time in a while 2. Learning to manage Gen Z and Alpha should be a priority for all leaders. 3. Growth mindset feeds cognitive diversity which improves teams outputs. I could go on, but I’ll stop. Last night at my son's state fair, I saw the magic of teamwork in action! 🌟 The kids absolutely rocked it, showing up as a united team. They spoke confidently in front of a whole gym of people (!!), cheered each other on, and nailed their presentations. It reminded me of 3 key areas for building a high-performing team: 1. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤: When we work together and support one another, we can achieve incredible things. 2. 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰: Believing in yourself and each other makes tackling new challenges exciting and rewarding. 3. 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭: Having a leader who guides, believes in, and pushes you is essential.
