🇺🇸⚓️ At the beginning of this month, #Austal received a contract extension from the U.S. Navy to build two additional LCU 1700-class amphibious landing ships. #USMarines🇺🇸⚓️ This new investment of $54,997,317 increases the original $379.9 million contract signed in 2023, which allowed for the construction of up to twelve vessels through the exercise of purchase options. Paddy Gregg, CEO of Austal Limited, stated, "The U.S. Navy has recognized that Austal USA has had a great start in building the first LCU vessel and has now exercised options for two more vessels." Construction of the first ship began in April of this year. The LCU 1700 ships are intended to complement the U.S. Navy's current amphibious assault ships by supporting missions such as transporting troops, vehicles, or various types of cargo to shore. https://lnkd.in/dUM5cqBy Each LCU 1700 is capable of operating in open seas, with a maximum range of 1,200 nautical miles. They can reach speeds of up to 11 knots and require a crew of 13 sailors to operate. All ships are being constructed at Austal's shipyards in Mobile, Alabama. austal.com/news/austal-us… #austal #austalusa #usnavy #landingcraftutility #LCU1700 #HumanitarianOps #SouthChinaSea

As I read this WSJ article, I can't help but think of Senator Barkley's accidental disclosure of sensitive information. In the annals of history, Senator Alben W. Barkley's inadvertent disclosure during World War II serves as a profound lesson in the stewardship of strategic assets. Representing Kentucky, Barkley, through a public communication misstep, revealed the superior diving capabilities of American submarines over Japanese torpedoes, inadvertently exposing a crucial advantage in the naval arms race. This episode not only underscores the fragility of strategic advantages but also the paramount importance of safeguarding sensitive information. Barkley's narrative is more than just a cautionary tale; it's a stark reminder of the delicate balance between transparency and operational security, especially concerning national security assets. The revelation brought to light the complexities and potential repercussions of handling classified information, demonstrating how easily strategic advantages can be compromised. This incident, while rooted in a bygone era, remains ever relevant, offering invaluable insights into the stewardship of strategic assets. It compels us to consider the broader implications of information security and the collective responsibility to protect the nation's competitive edges. Barkley's story is a testament to the enduring significance of vigilance, discretion, and the judicious management of information that underpins the safety and efficacy of strategic national assets. #StrategicAssets #InformationSecurity #NationalSecurity #HistoricalInsights #LeadershipLessons #OperationalSecurity https://lnkd.in/gK2EjKiY

Indo-Pacific strategic adviser | defence and national security | government relations | dual-use technology
"Richard Marles’s green light for a potential South Korean takeover of the government’s monopoly shipbuilder in Western Australia has sparked conflict of interest claims ahead of an $8bn tender to build eight new navy frigates in Perth". In Feb this year the Australian government " ... released a master plan that defines the strategic rationale for a #sovereign #defence industrial base and sets out pathways for maximising support for Australian industry and its critical contribution to #nationalsecurity". More recently the Minister for Defence Industry stated "The (Defence) Integrated Investment Plan ... is a record investment in defence capability and an investment in a future made in Australia, which will not only make the country safer, but also deliver dividends for industry and jobs for hard-working Australians". Both great policy stances to help build local capabilities, jobs and economic growth. At the same time building and protecting Australian IP. Given this, the decision to potentially lose a key Australian shipbuilding manufacturer through a foreign sale is a bit strange. Of course Austal will makes its decision on a commercial basis, but with the stated policies one would think the government would work to ensure the capability remained in our 'sovereign defence industrial base". Indian Coast Guard signs MoU with private sector for indigenous marine grade steel to increase indigenous content in shipbuilding. Coast Guard Inks Deal for Local Steel in Shipbuilding: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jindal Steel & Power (JSP) on May 7th, 2024, to source indigenous marine-grade steel for shipbuilding projects. This partnership aims to boost domestic steel production and increase the use of locally made materials in shipbuilding, promoting self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat). The MoU highlights the importance of public-private collaboration in national security and emphasises the need for closer ties between government agencies and private industries. The agreement guarantees quality, grade, and dimension specifications, along with designated steel plants for production, ensuring a reliable supply of marine-grade steel for the ICG's shipbuilding needs. This initiative signifies a step towards greater self-sufficiency in the Indian defence sector. Great, cheap or fast… pick two is the oft repeated quote. But how often do projects try and get the best from all three by relying on optimism or tacit acceptance at least one will slip? Reading this article about Type 31 is refreshing, it describes clear prioritisation of time and price that is currently going to plan. Plus it sounds like the export variant of Type 31 will have genuine market potential - presenting a price point and product that appeals to a variety of navies. I’ll be following with interest. “Type 31 procurement was based on setting a very competitive price point and asking industry to come back with the best capabilities they could provide within this budget. Equally, we also asked for an extremely competitive build programme. Our ambition, by the end of the programme, is to be able to build a frigate from first cutting steel to delivery in less than three years.” Quote from linked article. https://lnkd.in/eFf4CCaV
