Paddy Gregg, CEO of Austal Limited, stated, "The U.S. Navy has recognized that Austal USA has had a great start in building the first LCU vessel and has now exercised options for two more vessels." Construction of the first ship began in April of this year. The LCU 1700 ships are intended to complement the U.S. Navy's current amphibious assault ships by supporting missions such as transporting troops, vehicles, or various types of cargo to shore. https://lnkd.in/dUM5cqBy Each LCU 1700 is capable of operating in open seas, with a maximum range of 1,200 nautical miles. They can reach speeds of up to 11 knots and require a crew of 13 sailors to operate.
