13 years ago when I switched career from banking to VC, the book Venture Deals was one of the most valuable resource to understand common terms used in transactions. I love how they translate the Legalese to plain English! I believe the old blog posts that were the base of the book are also still accessible online (blog? What's that, ask the GenZs) This online course should be a great one, judging from past materials by the same guys (Brad & Jason). Highly recommended for entrepreneurs!

After 10+ years in VC, backing startups like BluSmart, Bold Care, and The Hosteller, I can tell you one thing: It is not as glamorous as everyone thinks it is. Here’s the reality: > 90% of startups fail. Constant recalibration is part of the job when portfolio churn is the norm. > One outlier can drive max of returns. It’s the power law, and that one big win has to make up for all the losses. > Fundraising is relentless. Juggling LP expectations while securing dry powder never ends. > Founder relationships run deep. You’re more than just an investor—you’re a coach, therapist, and sometimes a tough-love guide. > Board seats and cap tables are delicate. It’s always a balancing act between influence, ownership, and control. Despite all this, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The reason? Watching a founder rise from zero to category leader is worth every challenge along the way. And, in this world: t’s not just about finding the right companies; it’s about backing the right people—the ones who persevere against the odds. That’s where the real magic happens. #venturecapital #investments #vcfunds 

The same applies to investing in listed equities as well.

One obstacle I often see startup founders run into is approaching investor intros transactionally. What often happens is this: several months back, a well-connected individual mentioned to a founder that they could make intros to some specific investors. Then months later, when it's time to "hit go" on the fundraise, the founder asks their contact for the intro(s). But then things hit a snag because the contact says it's not possible anymore. So, I always emphasize the value of "re-warming up" your intros ~3 weeks before you need them. Share with that well-connected person your progress and what your fundraising plans are. Get them excited. And ask them if they're still willing to make the intro(s) in a few weeks' time. By giving them a heads up and securing a soft commitment first, you'll build trust and pave the way for a smoother introduction process. And if they tell you they can't make the intro, now you have time to find a backup plan. #StartupFundraising #VentureCapital #AngelInvesting
