Visionary Leader in Genomics and Oncology / Passionate about improving access to life-saving information

After taking a short break from posting, I'm back! This week, let's finish out the last two of the seven ABGC-board-certified practice competencies for Genetic Counselors. Competency #6: Healthcare Systems - demonstrate how disparities, inequities, and systemic bias affect access to healthcare for diverse populations - describe the financial considerations in the delivery of genetic services - advocate for continuity of care - collaborate with members of the Care Team, clients, and other Community Partners (https://lnkd.in/eK_PR4cx) Genetic counselors understand there are barriers to individuals getting the healthcare they may need, whether they are financially based (no insurance or insurance won't cover the needed test or procedure), knowledge-based (the provider isn't aware of their family history and/or the benefit of genetic testing), or socioeconomic imbalances (less is understood about the genetics of minority populations due to biases in research studies). Genetic counselors are tireless ADVOCATES for the patient to get what they need, from start to finish. This is whether they are working 1:1 with the patient in clinic or working to improve access to testing, counseling, or preventative care in the industry. Genetic counselors are excellent COLLABORATORS - due to their skills in communication and counseling. Bottom line - they understand healthcare and the healthcare system, both the provider and the patient point-of-view, and are both leaders and team players. You would do well to add one to your team today. Image by vectorjuice on Freepik
