I’m being paid less than my opposite-sex peer(s). Do I have an Equal Pay Act claim? The Equal Pay Act requires that men and women in the same workplace be given equal pay for equal work. The jobs need not be identical, but they must be substantially equal. This blog will review what the Equal Pay Act means and how it could relate to you.

We're only three months into 2024 and it's already been an incredible year for worker's rights and equality! The WGEA has burst the bubble on gender-pay gaps, paving the way for fair pay for women, fair access to senior management and executive roles, and validation for female-dominated industries and professions. This is just the beginning of breaking down an archaic systematic work model that does not value the parental, caregiving, and domestic responsibilities predominantly held by women. And that's not all! The Fair Work Ombudsman has passed the 'RIGHT TO DISCONNECT' in workplace law, granting employees the right to refuse to monitor, read, or respond to contact or attempted contact from an employer or third party outside of their working hours, unless their refusal is unreasonable. Employees will also have the right to challenge a refusal with FWC. Let's keep this momentum going! What MORE can you do in your workplace community to bring down direct or inadvertent bias towards women, youth, seniors, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) workers, and the Culturally and Racially Marginalised (CARM)

March 12, 2024 marks Equal Pay Day. At many companies in the US and around the world, the situation is far from equal. In 2023, women in the US were paid 78 cents for every dollar earned by men. This means women would have to work more than two months extra months to reach pay equality. The pay gap is even greater for women of color. There are mechanisms that we can support to narrow this pay gap including, but not limited to, pay transparency, not allowing companies to ask for pay history, and barring retaliation against workers who voluntarily discuss or disclose their wages.

📅 January 11th marks #InternationalParityatWorkDay, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of equal pay regardless of gender, race, or sexual orientation. In honor of this day, here are four tips for promoting equity in the workplace: 🌐 Foster a culture of fairness by providing training on equality, diversity, and inclusion. 🤝 Establish an Equality & Inclusion Council to actively challenge and advocate for workplace equality. 🎤 Attend talks and events to expand knowledge on the topic of workplace equality. 🤝 Engage with HR to understand their policies and actions taken to ensure workplace parity and equality. Employers have a legal obligation to provide equal pay to employees doing the same, equivalent, or equally valuable work. Not complying with equal pay laws can lead to consequences like paying unpaid wages, attending employment tribunal hearings, and damaging reputation. Get expert advice on equal pay with Avensure. Help us change the narrative on Equal Pay Day! Equal Pay Day represents how far into the current year women have to work to be paid the same amount that men were paid in the prior year. The Paycheck Fairness Act aims to address pay equity issues by prohibiting the use of salary history to determine wages, implementing pay data collection measures, and providing protections against retaliation for discussing wages. The gender pay gap affects women across various professions and education levels and worsens with age, highlighting the need for action to end this disparity. Together, we can work to ensure that Equal Pay Day happens on the same day for everyone. Click the link to see how you can help: https://ow.ly/WiF050QRwm7

Today is #BlackWomensEqualPayDay, reflecting how long into 2024 the average Black woman in the US would need to work to equal what the average non-Hispanic white male earned in 2023. For full-time year-round workers, Black women are paid just 69 cents for every $1 paid to white men. Click below to learn more and take action, such as advocating for the Paycheck Fairness Act. Employee Advocate - Freelance Trade Union Rep. Your fierce and supportive partner during tough times at work.
Should HR protect the organisation from equal pay claims, or fight for equal rights? As the Head of HR at East Northamptonshire Council I got in a lot of trouble for fighting for equal pay for women for myself and other women. In my dismissal letter, Glenn Hammons (who was at the time being investigated by the police as part of Operation Tuckhill) said the following. " Some individuals were cross and furious with you for doing this [raising an equal pay claim] ...therefore this is an example of your conduct detrimentally impacting on working relationships a serious breach of trust and confidence" ...and then decided to dismiss me. Chapter 5 of my new book "Let's Face the Music and Dance. From Good Girl to Free Woman: Why I set up a Trade Union and other stories" is all about how I tried to fight for equal pay and despite discovering injustice, was blocked at every turn. So what do you think? We would probably all agree that we don't have equal pay yet in the UK, but what is HR's role in this debate? And it isn't just about women, what about equal pay for other protected characteristics? #equalpay #socialjusticeatwork #fairnessintheworkplace #hrresponsibilities #fightforequality #organizationaletics #socialjusticewarrior #workplaceequality #hradvocacy Jay Webb Geraldine Baylis UN Women UK Ruth Cornish (Chartered FCIPD) Krista Powell Edwards, MA FCIPD Clare McCabe Claire Ingle Kirsty Baggs-Morgan🌶 Emma Djemil
