Artificial intelligence-powered coding assistant startup Augment Inc. stepped into the limelight today, announcing a bumper $227 million funding round that brings its valuation to $977 million, just shy of “unicorn” status. Today’s Series B round was led by high-profile investors that include former Google LLC Chief Executive Eric Schmidt and venture capital firms such as Index Ventures, Sutter Hill Ventures and Lightspeed Partner Ventures, and marks the entrance of yet another well-funded player in the AI coding industry. The company says its mission is to empower developers with powerful AI capabilities that will ultimately transform the way software is developed. Augment’s co-founders include Igor Ostrovsky, a former chief architect at Pure Storage Inc. and software engineer at Microsoft Corp., and Guy Gur-Ari, who previously worked as an AI researcher at Google. The company is led by Chief Executive Officer Scott Dietzen, whose resume lists Pure Storage, Yahoo! French startup Poolside nears $3B valuation for AI that can write code Paris-based AI startup Poolside is in discussions to raise nearly $500mn at a $3bn valuation for its large language model, which can write software code. The company has yet to launch its first product. It is currently training its LLM to improve by completing millions of tasks in tens of thousands of real world software projects. Bain Capital Ventures, an existing investor in Poolside, is in talks to lead the latest investment round. Poolside was founded in April 2023 by Jason Warner and Eiso Kant, former CTO at Microsoft-owned GitHub, and moved its HQ from the US to Paris following a $126mn seed round. Just saw Devin's video, and I'm really impressed! Devin is the first AI software engineer you interact with via a chatbot. It has its own browser, code editor, and terminal. It can build software and debug on its own. And he's available for hire on the maker's website! Devin was created by Cognition Labs, a US startup that raised $21 million in a Series A round led by Founders Fund. Today marks the end of the first week of my Headstarter AI SWE fellowship! 💻 This week has been packed to the brim with great activities. I’ve already gotten to: -build a new personal website, stonewerner.com -meet several accomplished founders such as Shariar Kabir, Miguel Acero, (both Ruby YC 23) and Nabeel Alamgir🦄 (Lunchbox) -conduct a mock DSA interview (LeetCode) and get real time feedback from my AI interviewer Some key 🔑 takeaways so far: -When meeting someone new, especially someone of high importance, ask them quality questions about them, their business, or their journey. People most likely won’t remember you, but they will remember a great question you asked. -Dustin Beadle told us the most powerful skill going forward is communication. It is crucial to be able to communicate yourself and your ideas to your team and to potential clients or customers. All the tech in the world is useless if nobody “gets it.” - Logan Havern emphasized to focus on finding a pain point and putting 100% of your energy into solving that pain point when trying to attract users. I’m very much looking forward to the 6 more weeks of the fellowship where my team and I will compete in hackathons, build AI-powered projects, and finish the fellowship by launching an app and scaling to 1000 users! 🚀 Huge shoutout to Yasin Ehsan 🚀 and Faizan Ahmed for building such an amazing community. 🙌 #headstarter #ai #startups #software
