We need to denormalize the 40 hour week. It’s an old idea that doesn’t work for a lot of people. Sure, part time jobs exist, but I don’t see a lot of them being offered for professionals. Some examples of individuals that might choose to work less than 40: • Folks dealing with serious medical conditions • Parents of young children • Those caring for elderly parents • Adults returning to school to improve their education • Folks helping their family business or growing their own small business • People who just prefer to work less Nearly all of us will find ourselves in one of these positions in our lifetimes. Most of us will deal with several at once (as I currently do). It would be incredibly helpful if most companies offered the option to easily dial back hours. I’m going to be experimenting with reduced hours. If you've tried it out, I'd love to hear about your experience.

"𝗡𝗼 𝗛𝗥, 𝗡𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺? 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗅" Imagine this: It's your first day at a new job, and you're super excited. You walk into the office, expecting a warm welcome from HR. Instead, you find a note taped to your desk saying, "Welcome! Please onboard yourself." You: Stare at the computer like it's a spaceship, wondering which button will launch you into the company system. Attempt to navigate the maze of company policies alone, feeling like you're deciphering an ancient scroll. Realize you don't have access to anything because, well, who needs system access, right? 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿.... You've: Brewed five cups of coffee because the coffee machine was the only thing that didn't require a password. Successfully created an email signature (maybe), though you’re not entirely sure it’s sending. 𝗕𝘆 𝗹𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲... You’ve found the break room after taking a scenic tour of the entire building. Figured out how to log into your computer by trial and error, mostly error. Sent a help ticket to IT, only to realize you don’t know the help desk email. You consider sending a smoke signal. 𝗘𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆... Your ‘Welcome!’ balloon is deflated, much like your energy. You’re on a first-name basis with the security guard, who seems to be the only one who knows where everything is. Contemplating if ‘Wing It’ should be added to your LinkedIn skills. HR might seem like just paperwork and policies, but let's be honest—without them, your first day could turn into an episode of 'Survivor: Office Edition.' When we hired someone recently (mind you, Offsite is a remote-first company) within a week they were in-person with their manager and immediate teammates. In other words, they held an offsite! And, it's only been a few weeks... But it seems like our new hire is off to a hot start! She collaborates w/ our other teammates as if she's been with our company for months, and while I don't want to speak for her... If I had to guess, she feels closer to the company's mission, vision, and values because she was at an #offsite / #teamretreat during her first week on-the-job. If you’re a remote-first company, why wouldn’t you invest in getting your entire company together at least once per year... ...and then ensuring your executive team and other departments meet regularly, anywhere from 2-4 times per year? A well-timed trip can work wonders for trust and team-building. Then, we can all go home and be crazy productive in a remote-first setting. This seems ideal, right? My “employee experience” at Madison | We Market Professional Services Firms started before my first day. Here are a few things that went well that might help you onboard your next hire. Send a pre-1st Day weekend text. Boundaries are important, but a little “Pumped for tomorrow!” text can do a lot to quell any Sunday Scaries. Make a good “Here’s your desk!” first impression. A curated box of less-than-corporate goodies, a handwritten note, and set-up tech go a long way. Time invested here pays off in a faster, more bought-in ramp up. Go out for a nice lunch. The reserved-for-clients steakhouse might be overkill, but breaking bread matters. Rally the team to celebrate where they’re coming from and where you’re headed. Give margin to settle. Back-to-back meetings squash any space to process. Especially given folks’ learning preferences, time for internal/external processing is helpful. (Plus tech logins & setup can be more annoying than you’d expect.) Clarify Day 2 Expectations. Day 1 is a whirlwind. Make Day 2 Less Windy with a few key goals, meetings, and rough agenda. In terms of bringing a new person in, HR paperwork and payroll details are table stakes. That’s not onboarding. That’s legally hiring someone without Uncle Sam getting angry. Do 1/3rd of these and you’ll set up everyone for a great first week.
