Care-giving attracts people with some of the biggest hearts I've ever met. People whose passion is to help others, especially older adults and people living with disabilities. I've found this to be true among direct care workers as well as those involved in activities, dining, transportation, nursing, administration, even owners of long term care facilities. Almost everyone's in the field because they care and they want to help. So it's heart-breaking to see these same people losing heart, losing their passion, and turning away from the profession. The day to day work is hard. It's complicated. It's easy to make mistakes. Complaints stack up, and when care professionals feel that they can no longer deliver on the promise they made to themselves and to others, they have no option but to leave. Often they leave the profession completely. This is unsustainable for the health of the long term care sector. We need more big-hearted people who know that they can make a difference every day and are energized by their profession.
