Human Trafficking is a Global Health Crisis that we all need to be aware of. We Run Oakland: For Children was formed because of the high incidence of trafficking in the city of Oakland and Alameda County. However, this issue is not unique to Oakland - the perils of trafficking impact many communities in CA and the United States. No matter what country, state, county, or city you live in, we should all share the humanitarian goal of protecting one another, especially the most vulnerable. To that end, we welcome you to have an Oakland mentality in this anti-trafficking movement. Build community power through awareness, conversation, advocacy, and action. There is even a virtual option to participate, so we have all our bases covered. We would love to see We Run Oakland in your city...We Run Oakland in (insert your city) _____, you fill in the blank! A Sista’s Touch (AST) & DopeOnly (DO) will be hosting our 7th Annual charity 5k run/walk, “We Run Oakland: For Our Children”, to raise human trafficking awareness. The event will be held on Saturday August 24, 2024, from 8am-12pm at Oakland Technical High School. While there are many causes to stand for, WE run and walk for the protection of our children against the greatest human rights violation of modern day time. The most effective way to protect our daughters/sons/grandchildren/nieces/nephews and our community, is to first recognize that human trafficking is a global public health crisis that requires community engagement to make an impact; AND to learn ways you can protect your family and others from the negative consequences to our community. This event is more than just a 5k, it is a family community event, designed to bridge community with resources to help prevent or to intervene where there is on risk of trafficking or exploitation. There are many ways to get involved: YOU can REGISTER to participate, YOU can INVITE others, YOU can DONATE, YOU can VOLUNTEER, and YOU can SHARE the information with family, friends, and professional organizations - We are always looking for Corporate Sponsors. The fight to stop human trafficking begins with YOU! Register now at: https://lnkd.in/gsE_parA Contact us at: Info@asistastouch.org

Research out of Yale shows people without children plan to leave significantly more of their estates to charity compared to those with descendants. How might we better engage this growing group? Maybe it’s time for fundraisers to host more events for childless cat people. 😻 “People with no children say they want to leave a greater share of their estates to charity, friends and extended family, according to research by two Yale law professors that surveyed 9,000 U.S. adults. … In the Yale study, people without descendants—children or grandchildren—intended to give 10% of their estates to charity, on average, more than triple the intended amount of those with descendants.” https://lnkd.in/gbcdzjch

I feel very lucky to work with the hospitality industry. It such a collaborative and fun sector to be involved in. What never ceases to amaze me about those in the industry, is that, despite the widely reported and significant challenges the sector continues to face, they remain committed to regularly coming together to support great causes, whether or not related to hospitality. Last week, Clarke & Son Solicitors again took part in the annual Drinks Trade Regatta, which raised a significant sum for charity. On 6th June we will be taking part in the London Bridge Walk, organised by our friends at Beds and Bars Group. This year, the walk will raise funds for AWARE Scotland. AWARE Scotland is a charity that believe that all children, regardless of their life experience, backgrounds and needs, have the right to happiness and the opportunity to self-develop. They help the most in need to achieve their full potential as valued members of the community. AWARE Scotland provide supported respite breaks focused on physical activity, mental wellbeing, social awareness and fun. Their unique experiences are designed to build confidence and engender lifelong friendships. Their respite care, tailors their activities for the needs of those with additional support requirements, to provide a diverse and inclusive environment for all. I have seen first-hand, the significant difficulties some of my friends face when it comes to finding activities suitable for children with additional needs. With the pandemic and challenging economic conditions, investment into existing and new services is severely depleted. Charities like AWARE Scotland have always played an important role in helping and developing the lives of young people, but their role is becoming increasingly critical to a greater number. Young people today are facing challenges and difficulties we had hoped had been consigned to the past. It has been widely reported that Millennials and Gen Z are likely to be the first generations worse off than their parents. Alarmingly, 2023 statistics showed 30% of children in the UK were living in child poverty and The Resolution Foundation has estimated that, in the short term at least, the number of people in the UK living in absolute poverty will continue to rise, reaching 12 million in 2024/25. Even those not in the direst positions are having to adapt. The sharp increase in cost of living has forced many families to cut back on discretionary spending, including activities and holidays. Looking forward, young people today are faced with increased costs of living and education, higher student and other debt, rents at unprecedented levels and house prices continuing to inflate. I know many of you reading this will have charities and good causes which you support. If you would like to help support this wonderful organisation, any donation, no matter how small, will be appreciated. Plus, I will be stuck with Alex May for the day. Surely that deserves something?
🗓️ On the 6th June, William Anderson and Alex May will join Beds and Bars Group for their Bridge Walk to support Aware Scotland. Aware Scotland believes all young people, regardless of their background, deserve happiness and opportunities for self-development. Their vision is to help those in need achieve their full potential through supported respite breaks and days out focused on physical activity, mental well-being, and fun. Curious about the history of charities? In 1801 The Census was first completed. This first comprehensive picture of the make-up of society has both a positive and negative impact on charity. It provides valuable insight into many social problems – such as mortality rates among children and the deprivation suffered by the elderly – but also highlights the sheer scale of many of these problems, and thus leads to widespread acceptance of the need for state intervention. https://lnkd.in/efKssCc7
