In 2000, Roca learned the practice of Peacemaking Circles from the Tagish Tlingit people in the Yukon Territories. Circles create opportunities for young people, police, and community members to understand and empathize with each other, learn to take accountability for causing harm, and begin to forgive those who have harmed them. 25 years later, Peacemaking Circles are still one of our best tools for community healing. #ThrowBackThursday #CommunityHealing #PeacemakingCircles

According to the United Nations, an estimated 50 million people are in modern slavery, including 28 million in forced labour and 22 million in forced marriage. Many of those victims live in developed countries like Britain – and in areas like Cleveland. According to latest Government figures, women are almost three times more likely as men to be the victims of sexual slavery. Their suffering may also feature elements of domestic, criminal and labour-related slavery. You could come into contact with a victim of modern slavery without even realising; however there can be some tell-tale signs. Watch the video to find out more: https://lnkd.in/eSq-bitD Cleveland has an anti-slavery network, which brings together partners to discuss and tackle slavery and human trafficking across the force area. The network has created an innovative Victim Care Pathway. It clearly maps the steps professionals need to take when dealing with victims of slavery and trafficking ensuring they follow the most appropriate pathway for support. Using “change agents” and “peacekeepers”, #AdvancePeace helps those affected by cyclical and retaliatory gun violence in unique ways, which include but not limited to: ✅ Designating “change agents” to work with fellows within an 18-month program ensuring participants don’t engage in #gunviolence. ✅ Meet and talk with their assigned fellows at least 3 times per day. ✅ When necessary, paying off debts that a fellow may owe someone that might be seeking revenge against them over said debt. ✅ Provide relocation expenses for fellows in order to diffuse a tense situation. “We do what works, not what people think is appropriate...How can I send a team of folks out into the community and expect the community to share information with us if we were sharing that information with law enforcement or the justice system. We would lose all our credibility and I would be putting my staff in danger,” reminds Paul Elam, Chief Strategy Officer of Advance Peace Lansing. Modern slavery is happening right here in every corner of the UK. Anyone can become a victim of modern slavery and that includes British citizens. Imagine if you had to flee your home because of war or discrimination or accepting a job offer to keep your starving family alive, pay for your mother’s medical treatment or keep the drug dealers from hurting you, only to find yourself working for no pay and threatened with violence to you or your family if you run away. People like that are in every town, village, and city in the UK, often hidden in plain sight. Which is why it is so important to spot the signs of modern slavery. Look out for the survivors, and listen when they speak. How trafficking presents each time is nothing unique. It comes in many guises, and it kills more than you know. You have a voice to influence where others cannot go. By joining hands, we can end this epidemic once and for all. Let us work together to empower lives, uphold human rights, and ensure a future where freedom is a right, not a privilege, for all. People trapped in modern slavery are often dehumanized and treated as mere objects controlled by others. This devastating reality can make it incredibly difficult for them to trust others or form relationships, even with those who aim to help. Many live in complete isolation, grappling with a profound lack of self-confidence and the heavy burden of shame and stigma associated with their status as survivors.
