The Optima® blog series, “Women in Design,” highlights the careers and accomplishments of pioneering women who have made remarkable contributions to the fields of architecture and design. These visionaries challenge conventions, push the boundaries of creativity, and inspire future generations with their passion and dedication to shaping our built environment. Among these distinguished individuals is Llisa Demetrios, the chief curator of the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity, dedicated to preserving, exploring, and expanding upon the legacy of her iconic grandparents Charles and Ray Eames — two of the most influential designers of the 20th century. In her role, Demetrios not only preserves their invaluable contributions to design but also advances the mission of making design accessible and meaningful to all, creating a space for current and future generations to learn from their approach to design thinking. https://lnkd.in/gKgdVSYB #womenindesign #designandarchitecture #architecturelovers #architectureanddesign #designlovers #eamesinstitute

Barcelona-based group FEM Kolectiva has won the 25 November Award for its work designing public spaces that address the needs of women in the Spanish city. Their project stood out for creating effective solutions that work alongside Barcelona's municipal initiatives, contributing to urban spaces that promote women's safety. FEM Kolectiva combine architecture and anthropology in urban design. Their work focuses on critiquing traditional urban planning, which often reflects patriarchal and capitalist values, and advocating for feminist cities that consider intersectional needs in public spaces. They examine how factors such as lighting, accessibility and diversity affect feelings of safety and inclusion, and propose alternative ways of organising urban environments to prioritise wellbeing. Since 2005, Barcelona's city council has presented the 25 November Award each year on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The winning project receives a €15,000 prize and institutional backing to support its implementation. Photo: La Rambla by Ralf Roletschek #FeministCities #Barcelona #EndViolenceAgainstWomen

🌍 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 🌹 Today, we join this important moment of reflection by sharing a message of strength and resilience, inspired by the personal and professional journey of our founder, Natalia Giacomino. ✨ "To All the Women: A Journey of Resilience, Reinvention, and Realignment." In the world of architecture, as in many other fields, the challenges are numerous. Yet Natalia found the strength to reinvent herself, building a path that centers on courage and talent. 🛤 A journey that began in China, passed through some of London’s most prestigious firms, and confronted complex environments, proving that change is possible. 💔 She faced the reality of toxic workplaces, the weight of prejudice, and the difficulties of balancing work and personal life. 💡 But in the toughest moments, Natalia found the courage to say "enough" and to choose her well-being—for herself and for those she loves. 👉 A message to all women: Do not let others define your worth. Take control of your own story. You can be architects of spaces, but also of your own life. 🛠 Today, Natalia continues to build not only architectural projects but also a workplace culture that supports and values women's potential through Natalia Giacomino Architects and Creations Atelier. 💬 Join us in celebrating women who fight every day for their independence and for a fairer workplace. Share your own stories of courage in the comments, and let’s inspire each other. 💪 🔗 [Read the full article on Elysium and learn more about our commitment.]https://lnkd.in/e-mreUw2 #StopViolenceAgainstWomen #NataliaGiacominoArchitects #EmpowerWomen #InternationalDay #DesignForChange #Resilience

Congratulations are in order - not just for the formidable women who've carved their names onto the shortlist, but for those who haven't. Why? Because we have had hundreds of entries showcasing the amazing people we have working within the industry which I think deserves celebrating. Whether you made the shortlist or were nominated, you are amazing and hugely appreciated by your peers and colleagues. You are seen, the work you do is seen and valued. If you didnt make the shortlist, dont let that deter you from your work and you may still be recognised in the Top100 list that is announced on the night of the gala dinner on September 30th hosted by National Federation of Builders. Massive hats off to our judges, who've had the Herculean task of sifting through hundreds of entries. Their dedication to the cause? Unparalleled. Their need for caffeine? Presumably astronomical. Do I mention coffee too much? For those itching to see the shortlist, head over to the CITB social media. Spoiler alert: I won't be the one ruining the surprise, after all the planning I daren't. And remember, this isn't just about one night of glitz, glamour, and construction chat (as enthralling as that sounds). It's about a year-round celebration of excellence, with events so exciting they make concrete seem interesting. Mark your calendars for 31st July and 29th October. We have a range of events designed to support you, your teams and the industry with sessions from Jo, Anne and Danielle. Lee Chambers will be there in October talking all things allyship, and frankly, if that's not a draw, what is? So, whether you made the list, didn't, or are just here for the suspense of it all, let's keep pushing the boundaries. Because in construction, as in life, it's all about building something that lasts.

A new paper from national architecture practice Hayball and the Champions of Change Coalition examines the impact of workplace power dynamics and privilege on career progression within the Australian architectural industry. Some of the findings include: - The Australian architecture industry today has a disproportionately high representation (70 percent) of men. - People of Indigenous descent make up less than one percent of the workforce. - The odds of being an equity partner were 2.3 times greater for participants with family connections in the industry, independent of participant demographic factors. Read more of the findings below. #powerandprivilege #architecture #diversityandinclusion

"Excessive - and most of the time exclusive - male speakers on speaking panels; excessive media focus on male characters; male-dominated directors still picking men for future 'male-dominated industries'; Do different genders imply a different way we see things? Does this mean we design differently? If we do, should we not include variety to offer, attend, and earn from variety?" These topics, amongst many others, were discussed at Women Architects at the Forefront - a talk organised by OASRLVT, Lisbon. It was a pleasure to be part of it. Thank you, Sara Mónica Nunes , for this invitation. With: Ordem dos Arquitectos and Ordem dos Arquitectos | SR LVT, Sara Mónica Nunes, Alexandra Paio, Andreia Garcia, Ana Isabel Nascimento Santos

Thanks to the Feminist Spatial Practices team for the invitation to be part of the interactive archive of practices launching tomorrow October 8. More information below and via link. "Feminist Spatial Practices—a global collective of architects, artists, designers, and scholars—is launching a new interactive online platform that celebrates the diverse ways that people practice feminism in the built environment. The platform offers an interactive new media visualization and a searchable index of 600+ global feminist practices in art, design, architecture, and activism. The experimental design of the platform enables visitors to discover relationships between practices, publications, exhibitions, and protest movements across time, with themes such as “experimental pedagogies,” “alternative materialities,” and “spaces for non-conforming bodies.” At the launch event, members of Feminist Spatial Practices will introduce the interactive archive, and guest speakers A.L. Hu, Jerome W Haferd, and Malkit Shoshan will share their work on intersectional gender equity in the built environment." More information about the launch here: https://lnkd.in/dkJ3uPKw
