Leading industry voices, writers and academics Dr. Harriet Harriss, Naomi House, Monika Parrinder and Tom Ravenscroft, have garnered international plaudits for their eye-opening book 100 Women: Architects in Practice. Showcasing the largely overlooked stories of women currently making their mark in the architectural world, there have been launch events and press coverage for the book from Dubai to New York, Uzbekistan to South Africa. For the first time, they will make their findings tangible and accessible to the public through 100 Women Architects: The Exhibition. Geographically balanced to feature architects from 79 countries across six continents, the exhibition will amplify their voices, and projects will be illustrated by photos and rendered as simplified 3D paper models, constructed by students from London’s RCA Architecture programme, under the guidance of Interior Design MA tutor Steve Jensen. On until the 28th of March 2025

The British Museum has announced a team led by Studio Weave as the winner of its competition to redesign the north and south entrances of the Museum creating a new visitor welcome pavilion. The project is part of the museum's wider Masterplan and will be delivered by Studio Weave, with Wright & Wright Architects, Webb Yates Engineers, Tom Massey - Landscape & Garden Design and Daisy Froud. Nicholas Cullinan, director of the British Museum, said: “As the most visited building in the UK, and one of the top three most visited museums in the world, first impressions count…We were very impressed by Studio Weave’s initial proposals. They perfectly balance a thoughtful visitor experience while remaining true to the British Museum’s historic building.” This week the museum unveiled an exhibition of models and images submitted by the architects shortlisted to redesign the Western Range of the museum. The exhibition consists of work by 6a architects, David Chipperfield Architects, Eric Parry Architects & Jamie Fobert Architects, Lina Ghotmeh, and OMA. As part of a design exercise, each practice was tasked with providing visionary approaches for the project, alongside the outline design of a limited selection of museum displays. While they are not final designs, visitors to the exhibit are being asked to submit feedback on the approaches, which will be passed to the Jury Panel as part of their consideration process. The Jury panel will announce the competition winner in Spring 2025. The model exhibition display is open from now until 2 March 2025. #britishmuseum #architecturecompetition #museums #exhibition

My advice is always, always arrive a DAY, or two, before your cruise embarkation. Flight delays, weather delays, crew delays - you name your delay and chances are one of them will impact your flight. Right? ⏰ Early arrival ensures a stress-free start and lets you explore the port city’s hidden gems. Plan ahead and enjoy your voyage worry-free! If you are joining, or thinking of joining My Small Group cruise aboard the Wind Surf on August 27, I will be arriving in Venice a good few days early. There is so much I want to do and see, but here's my first priority: The Venice Biennale of Architecture is a premier event for architecture enthusiasts (and that would certainly be me!), showcasing cutting-edge design and ideas. First on my to do list for the Biennale of Architecture: 🏛️ Explore the Central Exhibition * Visit the Arsenale and Giardini, the two main venues, to see the central exhibition curated by the Biennale’s Artistic Director and where I will feast on innovative projects, installations, and conceptual works from renowned architects and emerging talents worldwide. 🏛️ 🏛️ Visit the National Pavilions * Each participating country presents a unique pavilion with its perspective on the Biennale’s theme. I plan to spend time at the Canada Pavilion, where The Living Room Collective will represent Canada. The Living Room Collective is a group of architects, scientists, artists, and educators who work at the intersection of architecture, biology, and digital fabrication 🏛️ 🏛️ 🏛️ Attend Lectures and Talks * This is a maybe, but if time permits I would like to attend at least one panel discussion, lecture, or presentation by leading architects, designers and theorists and hear insight into contemporary challenges and solutions in architecture. 🏛️ 🏛️ 🏛️ 🏛️ Experience Site-Specific Installations * I am definitely going to look out for large-scale installations and performances around Venice, blending architecture with art and culture. Let's face it, if I am going to fly 8.5 hours from Toronto to Venice, I want more than a day or two there.. #windstarcruises #Italy #venice #architecturebiennale #architecture #TravelTips #CruiseTips

The Architectural Conservancy Ontario (Toronto branch) is hosting their annual symposium on September 29th! Snapshot of what to expect: Every year, the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario’s Toronto Branch hosts a symposium exploring current heritage ideas. Past themes have included Housing and Heritage, Main Streets, Modernist Schools, and Demolition. This year’s symposium will examine the phenomenon of Intangible Heritage or heritage that is distinct from built form. Intangible Heritage can relate to traditions, activities, commerce, communities, identities, and storytelling. There’s a sense in which all heritage has intangible elements. While it certainly has relationships with physical spaces, what makes Intangible Heritage different from built heritage is that its significance lies outside traditional evaluations of architectural merit. It is use, not aesthetics, that defines Intangible Heritage. Or is it? The narratives of Intangible Heritage are complex, intersectional, and in motion. Looking more closely at its presence across Toronto—from Kensington Market to Little Jamaica to Suburban Banquet Halls—this year’s symposium will highlight some of the things the term Intangible Heritage can and should mean and why. ‘The Age of Sinan: Architectural Culture in the Ottoman Empire’ by Gülru Necipoglu vividly explores the genius of Mimar Koca Sinan, the legendary Ottoman architect whose breathtaking mosque designs transformed Istanbul's skyline, revealing how his masterpieces were crafted through dynamic negotiations with influential patrons, reflecting the social and political fabric of the empire. Book Summary: “Mimar Koca Sinan (1489–1588), the most celebrated of all Ottoman Empire architects, is particularly renowned for his contributions to the cityscape of Istanbul. During his fifty-year career he designed hundreds of buildings, and his distinctive architectural idiom left its imprint on the terrain of a vast empire extending from the Danube to the Tigris. Sinan’s mosques are considered among his best work, and with their light-filled centralized domes, remain a testament to his inventive spirit and passion for experimentation. In this major study of Sinan’s extraordinary buildings, Gülru Necipoglu argues that Sinan’s rich variety of mosque designs sprang from a process of negotiation between the architect and his patrons, rather than from unrestrained formal experimentation. Using primary source material, Necipoglu describes how Sinan created a layered system of mosque types, reflecting social status and territorial rank.” Available: https://lnkd.in/dh5PGKdH Tags: #sinan_zubairsbookshelf #ottomans_zubairsbookshelf

Reviving Art in Architecture: A Look at France's '1% for Art' Policy This Policy is intended to bring new life into architecture by integrating art seamlessly into public spaces. This innovative approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of buildings but also fosters cultural growth and appreciation. By allocating this small percentage of construction budgets to art installations, France has set a precedent for other countries to prioritize art in urban development. This strategy promotes creativity, stimulates local economies, and enriches the daily lives of residents and visitors alike. Of course... some applications are better than others. #artintegration #culturaldevelopment #art #architecture #investing #lifestyle #220dots
