On International Women’s Day, the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) celebrates the indispensable contributions of women in the hospitality industry, emphasizing the crucial role of female leadership and involvement. The association urges stakeholders from both public and private sectors in the Caribbean hospitality industry to unite in advancing gender inclusion and equality. In response to this year’s theme, “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”, CHTA President Nicola Madden-Greig, who also serves as the Group Director of Marketing & Sales for The Courtleigh Hospitality Group in Jamaica, is reinforcing the association’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of female leaders. Initiatives such as the CHTA’s Young Leaders Forum are pivotal in offering young professionals from across the region opportunities for growth and development. “With 19 out of 23 participants being female, this program plays a crucial role in inspiring and empowering the next generation of women leaders,” Madden-Greig remarked. She further advocated expanding such initiatives throughout the Caribbean to cultivate a more equitable and diverse leadership landscape in the tourism and hospitality industry. “To truly accelerate progress, we must enhance support for the development of women, especially female entrepreneurs,” she added. Vanessa Ledesma, acting CEO and Director General of CHTA, shared her journey as a female leader in the hospitality industry and the influence of incredible female leaders: “I’m proud to witness the remarkable female representation in our industry and within CHTA. However, there’s still a long way to go as we encourage others to pursue their passions for Caribbean hospitality.” With a history of female leadership, having seen four out of the past five CHTA presidents being women, and many national hotel and tourism associations led by women, CHTA, now in its 62nd year, highlights notable female leaders. Alongside Madden-Greig and Ledesma, this roster includes past presidents Patricia Affonso-Dass from Barbados, Karolin Troubetzkoy and Berthia Parle from St. Lucia, Karen Whitt, Regional Vice President from Turks and Caicos, Paola Rainieri, 4th Vice President from the Dominican Republic, and Lisa Hamilton, President of the Caribbean Society of Hotel Association Executives (CSHAE) from the U.S. Virgin Islands. I heard some interesting tidbits while attending the #SKIFTGlobalForum last week. Here's one: By 2030, unmarried women over age 65 will be the sector holding the most wealth in the USA. That being a truth, it means we are already on the path to that, as this is almost 2025. How are #travelsuppliers working to earn their business? How are #hotels accommodating safety and décor in their plans? An example in décor is more magnifying makeup mirrors. How are #cruiselines and #touroperators adjusting their ships and itineraries? An example there: the horrible practice of 100% single supplements. Women with money aren't going to "share" small ship cabins with strangers in order to accommodate the cruise lines' practice of filling all cabins with two persons. There are many ships on order right now, as the #cruisebusiness is booming: are the designs taking this change in wealth ownership into account? It will be an interesting 5 years to see which #travelindustry suppliers are working to attract this valuable sector.

Celebrating heritage and culture is about more than just remembering where we come from—it’s about fostering unity, understanding, and respect across the globe. When we honor our roots, like marching on Fifth Avenue for 14 years or performing on the red carpet, it becomes a powerful expression of identity. But it goes beyond individual pride; it becomes a symbol of shared humanity. Seeing myself on the cover of the Wall Street Journal isn’t just about being Italian. It's about sharing my soul, my passion for celebrating heritage, and my dream of a world without borders. It’s a vision where diversity is embraced, and cultures are celebrated, creating a future rooted in unity, peace, and mutual respect. These moments remind me that when we honor our past, we are also paving the way for a better, more inclusive tomorrow. Culture can be a bridge. By celebrating who we are, we invite others to do the same, leading to a collective journey towards acceptance and harmony. Evviva l’Italia!

Why is superyachting still a “man's world"? One striking observation for a #DEI consultant at the Monaco Yacht Show is the gender imbalance in one of the most male-dominated industries in the world. How male-dominated are we talking? Globally, 98% of yacht owners are men. On the other hand, 99% of sales executives in the industry are men, according to an insider from Monaco. The charter business is somewhat more inclusive: a professional from Antibes estimates the percentage of female charter brokers and managers at impressive 70%, although inclusivity ends when you look at the CEOs and founders. The top 20 companies are run by men even if there are success stories down the ladder. It’s worth exploring why yachting seems so rigid, even as other mastodons, like finance, have moved toward greater gender balance in leadership. On the yacht ownership side, wealth distribution alone doesn’t explain the disparity. Around 10% of the ultra-high-net-worth population is female, which is five times more than the percentage of women who actually own yachts. This suggests that even when women have the means to own a yacht, they often choose not to. While there are notable exceptions, such as JK Rowling and her 290-footer, yachts remain a "boy's toy" in many cases. On the corporate side, the male dominance is attributed to the tough career path required to become a top executive. Most of sales leaders are former captains with at least 10-15 years of experience at sea. A Monaco-based female yacht broker noted that she wouldn’t aspire to a lifestyle where months go by without seeing family. She emphasized that while there are no formal barriers for women to become captains, many opt to leave the sea before reaching the necessary level of seniority. That said, change, albeit slow, is happening. In the last decade the proportion of female captains has doubled, though only from 1% to 2%. And when these women eventually settle ashore, it’s not hard to guess where they’ll land🙋♀️ #MYS2024 Monaco Yacht Show S.A.M. Kennedy Executive Search

🎉 Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo! Here's how to celebrate respectfully. 🇲🇽 Let's dive into the rich history behind Cinco de Mayo! This day commemorates the Mexican victory over the French 🇫🇷 at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, a symbol of resilience and unity. Did you know that it's not Mexico's Independence Day❓ That's celebrated on September 16th.💡 However, as we celebrate, it's essential to acknowledge the commercialization of Cinco de Mayo. While it's become synonymous with margaritas 🍹 and parties, let's not forget its significance. This day holds deep cultural and historical importance for Mexicans and Mexican-Americans alike. To honour the spirit of Cinco de Mayo respectfully, let's avoid perpetuating stereotypes. Mexican culture is diverse and vibrant, extending far beyond sombreros and mustaches. Let's appreciate the richness of Mexican heritage without reducing it to caricatures. 🚫 What you shouldn't do: ➡️ Wear stereotypical costumes or props ➡️ Use cultural appropriation for decorations or social media posts ➡️ Assume all Mexicans celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the same way So, as we celebrate, let's raise awareness of the true meaning behind Cinco de Mayo, honour its historical significance, and embrace diversity with respect and understanding. 🎊 [alt description in the comments] #EquityInAction #DiversityMatters #InclusionJourney #DiversityandInclusion #DiverseVoices #EqualityForAll #SocialJustice #Empowerment #RepresentationMatters #InclusiveLeadership #Intersectionality #DiversityInTech #InclusiveCulture #GenderEquality #CulturalDiversity #RacialEquity #InclusionRevolution #ChangeMakers #InclusiveCommunity #gkwcc #greaterkwchamber #cambridge_chamber #edistrategy #canadiansme #smallbussiness #startup #womeninbusiness
