At the risk of stating the obvious: Communities are typically made up of people. You hear a lot about how nonprofits should build their community as part of their fundraising efforts, but we often lose sight of the individuals who make up that community. There’s that donor who calls you to complain about the appeal you sent, but still gives anyway. Somehow, there’s always someone who stops you in the hall and talks your ear off about their grandkids whenever you’re in a hurry. Let’s not forget about that committee member with perfect attendance who has all the far-out ideas and tends to ramble. It’s easy to neglect these kinds of relationships, but, if you’re disciplined and consistent in your cultivation efforts with them, you’ll find yourself surrounded with plenty of unique and diverse superfans ready to change the world with you. Like how you build a house one brick at a time, you build a community one relationship at a time. (Side Note: I don't actually know how building houses works) #fundraising #community #relationships

Does size matter? One of my more interesting discussions is when people want to categorize the "size" of a nonprofit's operations. What dictates if something is small? Midsize? Large? Enterprise? Revenue? Staffing? Program reach? Geographic reach? What about nonprofits with ample grant funding or government service fees but a handful of full-time employed staff? What about volunteers? I've spoken with nonprofits with a handful of staff and over 1000 volunteers. How do you describe your nonprofit if the organization's size comes up?
