This little girl is me… Since 2012, 11 October has been marked as the International Day of the Girl. The day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights. The theme for 2023 is “Invest in Girls' Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being”. In 2023, we're witnessing a range of movements and actions detrimental to girls' and women's rights. Reports suggest that it could take another 300 years to close the global gender gaps.” Today's generation of girls are preparing to enter a world of work that is being transformed by innovation and automation. Education is the golden ticket to changing outcomes for girls. I have said it 1000 times, no girl should ever miss out on an education because her family cannot afford period products. On 11 October, International Day of the Girl, today and every day we will continue to ensure that no girl or woman misses out on a day of education or work because they are not afforded menstrual equity. Under the theme, “Invest in our girls” International Day of the Girl will mark the beginning of a year-long effort for Share the Dignity to bring focus to all states and territories, stakeholders in Australia to advocate for, and draw attention to the data that shows the detrimental damage to girls and women in Australia when we don’t have menstrual equity.
