“Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together” - Woodrow Wilson I had the honor of watching these 4 men grow from interns to chiefs right before my eyes. 5 years of learning alongside them, seeing their wins and their losses, and watching them grow into the great surgeons that they are destined to be. 4 Chief residents off to their fellowships and off to make the world a better place with their craft. 4 men who live out their Faith and exemplify what it means to be an orthopedic surgeon: Leadership Compassion Willingness Skill Adaptability The list goes on and on… I had the honor to be invited to be apart of their graduation dinner, and in that moment I felt a sense of gratification that I was but a tiny part of their growth and success. But truthfully, I learned more from this class than I could have ever taught them. Late nights in the OR. Late afternoons on the golf course. Early mornings talking through the attendings plans for that tough case. Beers at the Halloween party. Wins. Losses. So many reps that I talk to just want to work in an ASC and do their cases and go home. They want the quick turnover times. The 8 primaries by 3 o’clock. The show up and go home schedule. But I wouldn’t trade the experiences I’ve had for anything. As reps, our skills are forged in the fires of early mornings, late nights, and tough and unexpected curve ball cases. The ones that build character. Don’t shy away from them, but be prepared for ALL of them. I encouraged a talented dental assistant to leave dentistry (and why I’d do it again). She was very skilled, efficient, a true asset to the practice. But I saw her passion lay elsewhere. So, I did the unthinkable: I encouraged her to leave. "Go chase your dreams," I said. "Dentistry isn't your calling." She resisted at first. It took months of conversations and a bit of tough love, then one day… She said, "I'm going to do it." I said, "Boom, you're out!" 💥 It was a bittersweet moment, but I knew it was the right thing to do. Fast forward to today: She owns TWO successful businesses! 🤩 She still checks in, sharing her wins and expressing her gratitude. That's what true leadership is about for me: Empowering people to chase their dreams, even if it means they leave my practice. Because seeing them thrive? That gives me chills. It's not about holding onto talent at all costs. It's about fostering growth, even if it leads them away from my door. If we can do that at scale, if we can create a ripple effect of success... That's the ultimate goal. That's why I do what I do. #leadership #mentorship

Silencing my inner critic was the game-changer in my journey from dentistry to a new career. Working through self-doubt during my transition from dentistry was a process of self-discovery. Life is short! I snapped this picture of my son and I after his emergency surgery about 4 yrs ago. I had just come home from work and didn’t even have time to change when we rushed him to the ER. He had a strangulated umbilical hernia and needed corrective surgery immediately. That night was a long night. I spent the next 2.5 days ( no breaks) holding him in recovery while my wife was taking care of our toddler daughter. My son is better now and I’m glad there are experts that are used to performing surgeries on children. At the same, my company had just purchased our 1st building and was in the middle of construction. I was dealing with lots of work projects and company decisions/development that had to be dealt with. Once the initial emergency had been handled, I was able to delegate and assign various things to our team. The saying…don’t bite off more than you can chew!!! I felt that at that moment I had bitten off way more and was drowning. Going through this experience and many other similar experiences has taught me a lot about myself but also of those around me. I often look back on this picture to motivate me because it helps me remember that life is short and I am capable of handling chaos. Here is some of my advice if you are building your company. 1. Others need to see your vision and help carry it forward when you cannot. 2. Surround yourself with people that can and will go the extra mile. I’m grateful for my team!!! 3. Be kind and happy to all those around you. You have no idea what others are going through but it’s probably hard. What is some advice you’d recommend for someone starting out building a company?
