Being a newcomer at a significant exhibition event like Outdoor Retailer in Salt Lake City can be challenging, and building traction and interest is vital. This is how we did it… Our booth was constantly busy, and we reached numerous contacts and potential future partnerships, significantly boosting our brand awareness and receiving sales orders. Winning the Innovation Award from the show was indeed a bonus. Our secret to success? Engagement and fun activities! We organized a unique raffle where attendees could taste river water filtered by our Vitaloop bottle. Yes, you read that right—river water! Those brave enough to try were entered to win their very own VITALOOP. This creative and interactive approach drew a constant crowd and gave us valuable contacts for future partnerships. → Our tip for fellow exhibitors: Keep your booth interactive and fun! It's the best way to attract attention, make lasting connections, and stay memorable. * Focus on the product that resonates the most with the target audience at the show.  * Work with the organizers to ensure you get a good location that reflects your product category. A good location makes a difference. * Attending an exhibition is the best practice ground as you will meet many different customers and companies with customers who see things differently. Be open-minded, listen to what they say, and do not focus only on selling your story. Learn, adapt, and tune your story so it resonates even more. Outdoor Retailer Summer 2024 was a blast. Within Grassroots, our mission is simple around how we approach our events - to provide independent outdoor retailers with the most efficient and cost effective path to getting their required work done each season. Due to the scheduling we conduct on behalf of retailers allowing them maximum control over lines they see at Connect, we have excellent insight into event engagement well before the first bag has been packed. This spring, overall participation numbers for Connect are up (6% increases in retailer and exhibitor attendance both); however the number of exhibitors and retailers only demonstrates aptitude for event success. To cut through the noise, we track a couple of key stats that provide deeper insight into retailer and vendor engagement. My favorite stat overall is 'Average Hours Scheduled per Buyer'. This provides a less subjective metric when measuring whether we're achieving our mission by helping retailers get their work done and providing a productive environment for exhibiting vendors. For Spring 2024, our average hours scheduled sits at 22.41 per buyer. For context there are a total of 32 hours of overall show time. In Spring 23' that stat was 21.70 and in Fall 23' it was 22.10. Its worth noting that in order to average around 22 hours, there are buyers on both sides of the bell curve with many being booked for the full time at the event. We also pay close attention to exhibitor appointment changes YoY. This spring, we have 63% of exhibitors with an increase in appointments from last spring. With limited show floor space, appointment trends and retailer sentiment drive our invite process for all exhibitors at Connect. Lastly, as a retailer owned organization, Grassroots Connect & Discovery Marketplace operate in a manner that distribute all event 'profits' to help offset retailer travel costs during the event. This ensures that a dollar spent showing the line at Connect flows directly within the industry - something we see as critical in the margin constrained market our industry is operating in today. #vivalaspecialty #specialtyretail #specialtyevents

I said it, so here's my take on today's Outdoor Retailer show. There is something new (and old) happening. IMO, they should lean in and position it as the place to discover tomorrow's brands, and the buyers will follow. I love Grassroots Outdoor Alliance but for completely separate reasons. At Grasscon, we see our extended family (our retailers) for a reunion twice a year. It's amazing and helps us build real relationships. But we also need to meet some new people, you know. We're still young! The industry needs a place for the next generation to make their mark. Maybe that's OR again? “We met retailers that are brand new, and they’re going to buy their first assortment and are looking for smaller, newer brands that everybody else doesn’t have. And that’s something that you don’t find at the other shows we attend – retailers are looking for new brands here,” said Andrew Gibbs-Dabney, founder of LIVSN, an exhibitor at Outdoor Retailer. “I love seeing people that I only see once or twice a year. When we’re in our little bubble back in Arkansas designing, we’re not out in the world. The rebrand life cycle doesn’t start the day you decide to rebrand. It starts when you open your doors as a business. What are your company’s core values? Why did you start the company? Just returned from three insightful days at OutDoor by ISPO in Munich. We had an incredible time talking with brands from across the industry & here are some key takeaways from our conversations: - Sustainable, value-based products are the driving force behind Gen Z's purchasing decisions in the outdoor industry. Over 70% of GenZ mention that, regardless of motivation - sustainable, value focused products & brands, drive their purchasing decisions. Their preference for sustainability and the trend of "voting with your dollar" will significantly impact the industry for the foreseeable future. - Ultra Light (UL) gear is no longer limited to enthusiasts obsessed with pack weight. It has evolved into a segment that resonates with aspirational outdoor consumers, reflecting a broader appeal beyond just pack weight-conscious individuals. - The demand for innovative backpacking meals has been on the rise & it is a driver of innovation internationally. Brands are striving to revolutionize the traditional dehydrated/freeze-dried options, catering to recreational outdoor enthusiasts who seek homecooked-like alternatives. Despite the challenges, meeting this demand is crucial for breaking the monotony in the outdoor food category.
