The UK’s charging infrastructure took a massive leap forward in 2024, growing by 38% with 20,000 new public charge points added. This brings the total to 73,699 charge points, reinforcing the nation’s shift toward sustainable mobility. It’s great news for EV owners, but there’s a lot to unpack—so let’s break it down. The Numbers That Matter - Slow & Fast Chargers (Under 50kW): Expanded by 36% to 59,228 devices, remaining the backbone of EV charging in the UK. These chargers are vital for everyday use and urban settings—perfect for cost-efficient slow charging, especially for home and workplace needs. - Ultra-Rapid Chargers (150kW+): Grew by 83%, reaching 7,021 devices. These high-speed chargers are ideal for long trips, reducing “range anxiety” for EV drivers on motorways. - Charging Hubs: Doubled to 537 locations with 6+ rapid/ultra-rapid chargers. With over 380,000 EVs sold in 2024, EVs now account for 19% of all new car sales. More EVs mean more demand for reliable and accessible charging, especially for those who don’t have the luxury of off-street parking. While ultra-rapid chargers make headlines, slow charging is the silent enabler of mass EV adoption. Here's why: - Cost-Effectiveness: Slow charging (home or work) is far cheaper than rapid charging, making EV ownership more accessible. - Grid Stability: By spreading energy demand over several hours, slow charging integrates more renewable energy, reducing strain on the grid. - Convenience: 80% of EV drivers already charge at home, according to surveys. Investing in slow charging infrastructure—like lamppost chargers—ensures everyone has access, even without a driveway. Not everything is perfect. London accounts for 72% of on-street chargers, leaving regions like Wales and Northern Ireland underserved. Plus, charger reliability still needs work. New regulations (introduced in late 2024) now mandate 99% uptime for rapid chargers—a huge step forward. For rural areas and smaller towns, slow charging is a cost-effective way to bridge the gap. On-street and workplace charging could play a pivotal role in closing regional disparities, especially with funds like the LEVI scheme coming into play. The UK is on track to hit 300,000 public charge points by 2030. But with the government’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate kicking in this year, the race is on to ensure infrastructure keeps pace with booming EV sales. Here’s what we can expect: - “Plug & Charge” Tech: Faster, more seamless charging experiences thanks to ISO 15118 compatibility. - Flexible Tariffs: Encouraging EV owners to charge during off-peak hours to save money and stabilize the grid. - More Slow Charging Solutions: Essential for filling gaps where rapid chargers aren’t viable.
