Accessible voting is the law, and it applies to both in-person voting and voting by mail. All of Florida's 67 counties have an accessible vote-by-mail program that enables voters with disabilities to fill out their ballots using their own technology from the comfort of their homes. Today is Disability Independence Day, which marks the day when the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law in 1990. In spite of this, many voters with disabilities still face barriers to the ballot box today. For starters, less than half of polling places in America are accessible, which means many disabled voters trying to vote in-person can't even get to the polls. Even worse, 14 states have enacted over a dozen restrictive voting laws ahead of the 2024 election that would disenfranchise voters with disabilities, including laws that criminalize absentee ballot assistance and narrow access to vote-by-mail. These laws underscore why Congress needs to pass the Freedom to Vote Act, which would make vote-by-mail, early voting and drop boxes accessible to EVERY American. #DisabilityIndependenceDay #DisabilityPrideMonth #democracy #accessibility #voting
