Gun violence survivors often have to figure out on their own how to shoulder the immediate financial fallout of gun violence. This includes funerals, medical and therapy expenses, and working a job while trying to navigate their trauma and grief. A new blog from Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium Affiliate Scholar Jennifer Carlson looks at some of the paths survivors take to help them through these unexpected expenses. https://lnkd.in/exEa_FSD

In our society it feels like we’re not supposed to talk about suicide. We shut up. Never mention it again. Move on. I disagree with that approach. I talk about it because it’s how to address problems. Talk about the hard things. And it is a problem. I’m 40 now and I’ve lost my Dad, my best friend, my step brother, and my good friend, all to suicide. All with guns. Growing up in Texas, easy access to guns was always there. You’re born owning them. Family heirlooms get passed down from generation to generation. It’s normal to see them around your communities. Reading this article made me see information worth sharing that I think people don’t always know or honor. “Murder rates and mass shootings make national headlines, defining the discussion over pervasive gun violence. But most gun deaths in America are self-inflicted. There were about 27,000 gun suicides in 2022. That was a record, and far higher than the 19,500 gun homicides documented that year…. Nationally, guns were used in about 55 percent of such deaths…. Research has shown that 135 people can be “exposed” to a single suicide and that some of those closest to the person who dies can be at greater risk of contemplating suicide themselves.” I’ve had people say it makes them uncomfortable hearing about it. Well it can be uncomfortable talking about sad things. But it’s worse not talking about them when the repercussions can be so great. It’s not about dwelling. It’s about excavating. It’s about uncovering the human condition and understanding it better to better address it. Now I’m no professional on this topic, but who really is? What I do know is I’ve known a lot of losses in these 40 years. Suicides, overdoses, disease, even murder. And I’m a privileged white guy from well to do Houston, and I still have a beautiful life. I have an incredible wife and two healthy sons and great family and friends. But I’ve known suicide first hand since I was 9. And when I was 23. And when I was 34. And 38. Some things need to change and we need to address this bear. Gun safety is about more than your rights. It’s about your well being and about those who love you too. So I’ll put it out there, but those that know me already know this. If you ever need to talk on this, I am always here. And I’m not going any where. And I’ll die on this hill that we need to take care of our society with better gun laws, better mental health care, and better self care. Off my soapbox now. Take good care this week and this life. People love you more than you know. Make the world a little better if you can. Best, Sam https://lnkd.in/eCMsGi-Z

Look, it's not about taking away your guns. That's not going to happen, especially after the recent SCOTUS decisions. It's about keeping a VERY effective tool for taking lives away from those who want to take their own lives until the risk is mitigated. It is about equipping impulsive, primarily White, men with the tools necessary to deal with suicidal ideation. And it is about fixing a culture that leads people to see threats all around them, especially in people who look different than they do. This article talks about several instances of death by suicide of gun owners whose life pressures to be "protectors" against an inexistent enemy led them to die by suicide. It includes sobering statistics and research on the burden of suicide on American society. Worth a read if you are into #PublicHealth, #ViolencePrevention, #SuicidePrevention, and even if you are a strong advocate for everyone being armed to the teeth. If you or anyone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please call 988 in the United States, or reach out for help. We need you around. You are not alone. https://lnkd.in/eCtu2kg4

“There have been more gun suicides than gun homicides in the United States every year for the past 25 years. Yet the harm inflicted on communities by suicides rarely registers in the national debate over guns.” I realize this is a very sensitive topic. American obsession with guns and our poor mental/spiritual/public health care are a significant part of the issue here. Additionally, the powerful gun lobby is at fault here, but they will never take any responsibility or accountability for what’s happening in our country regarding gun violence and suicides. We as Americans need to start having some very important conversations within our families, communities, and country. But it can’t stop with conversation, we must take action toward building a more loving and compassionate society. It’s interesting how one of the narratives around guns is that they protect us and make us safe. I think the data and all the stories of heartbreak across this country tell a very different story 🤷🏼♂️ It’s so easy for these conversations to get partisan, but let’s remember these are human beings. This isn’t about partisan politics, it’s about making our relatively short time here on earth a more loving and safe place for all.

What measures can communities implement to enhance security during large gatherings, such as funerals, in high-crime areas? Gunfire at a Funeral: Tackling Community Violence and Ensuring Safety During Mourning Gunfire erupted outside Bates Memorial Baptist Church in Louisville's Smoketown neighborhood during a funeral, leaving two people injured. The incident, which occurred around 2:15 p.m., involved a shooting in the church's parking lot and a nearby alley. Both victims were taken to UofL Hospital and are in stable condition. The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) Non-Fatal Shooting Unit is investigating, but no suspects have been identified. Community members expressed fear and frustration over the violence, emphasizing the need for increased security and respect for human life. Key Takeaways: - Enhanced Security for Large Gatherings: Implementing security measures such as increased police presence and community watch programs during large gatherings can help deter violence and ensure safety in high-crime areas. - Collaborative Efforts to Reduce Gun Violence: Strengthening partnerships between law enforcement and community leaders is crucial for developing and executing strategies to reduce gun violence and improve public safety. - Support Services for Traumatized Residents: Providing mental health support and counseling services for residents affected by frequent gun violence can help them cope with trauma and contribute to community healing and resilience. #churchsecurity #churchcrime https://lnkd.in/gFXtaGC4

My deepest condolences go out to everyone affected by today’s devastating and tragic mass shooting in Kansas City. What I’m going to say next, I‘ve said at least thousand times. The vast majority of you won’t read this part and the vast majority of the people who read it won’t do anything about it beyond “like” the post, which is basically the same as doing nothing. Indifference is far worse than hate, because indifference allows hate to grow and spread. We must start teaching people how to love themselves and others. The vast majority of mass shootings and other senseless violence are a direct result of the fact that no schools teach how to love and very few households model how to love (because the parents have never been taught). We have to make this a priority or else we will continue this sick cycle of violence, thoughts, prayers, and thousands of senseless deaths and injuries every year. We cannot arrest our way out of this problem. We won’t pray our way out because even God told us that faith without works is dead. Stiffer penalties won’t solve it. Kudos to our brave members of law enforcement for their bravery, but we need to stop these tragedies from happening long before they happen! For the love of God, we need to wake up and stop being so indifferent. We need to take action and by “we” I mean you! Stop thinking that someone else will solve this problem because they won’t. It’s up to you. Join the L.O.V.E. Is The Answer Movement and become the solution. L.O.V.E. Is The Answer https://lnkd.in/e6-Bhktg

Gun violence is not normal, and Americans do not need to accept it as such. We have the tools, strategies, and people to prevent daily tragedies resulting from this violence. But for too long, the federal government has dramatically underspent on proven community-based programs that address the root causes of gun violence, while spending billions in reactive interventions after harmful and fatal incidents have already occurred. It’s time for a proactive approach. Tell Congress to pass the Break the Cycle of Violence Act now to provide federal grants for community violence intervention programs.

Why are so many people feeling the effects of trauma today? One big reason: gun violence. It's hitting communities of color hardest and we can't look away. This article details the steps Boston is taking that include plans that focus on people, but we need to do this everywhere. #GunViolencePrevention #publichealth https://lnkd.in/eWuqTcms

Storyteller | Advocate | Changemaker | Director of Trauma-Informed Programs at Everytown for Gun Safety
Today Everytown for Gun Safety released a new report that shines light on the dual tragedies of intimate partner homicide-suicides. For many people, it is a surprise to learn that a perpetrator kills an intimate partner and then dies by suicide more than once per day in the US, on average. It may be less surprising to learn that access to a gun is at the center of 93% of these dual tragedies. The new report, anchored in the lived experiences of 43 people who participated in our focus group study, reveals the complex risk factors, stigma and barriers to seeking help, and aftermath of these traumatic incidents. It was an extraordinary honor to witness survivors break silence about tragedies steeped in stigma and work on this project along with Tannuja Rozario, PhD. Please check out the report to read the words of survivors and learn more about the ways we can prevent these tragedies and save lives. This report is dedicated to every life taken or forever changed by an act of intimate partner homicide-suicide. Dual Tragedies: Domestic Homicide-Suicides with a Firearm https://lnkd.in/etetV2Rc
