Exotic animals (frogs, snakes, iguanas, scorpions, caimans, etc.) should be left in their native habitats. They are not good pets because the do not much care for people, more than half die during transport, ecosystems are negatively affected by their removal, and many exotic species have been pushed to extinction in their wild environments. In addition, if the pet becomes unmanageable, many are released into environments where the become invasive, often damaging native environments. It’s better for humans, the animal, and the environment if we limit our pets to those bred for human contact. Excerpt: Birds are among nature’s most beautiful animals, and it’s no wonder countless people are drawn to the idea of having one in their home. The U.S. is believed to be home to more than 40 million pet parrots, alone, and birds are considered the country’s most popular pet after dogs, cats, and fish. Yet, there is a dark side to the pet bird industry that few bird owners are truly aware of. The capture of birds from the wild for sale as pets has led to the near-extinction of many species. Furthermore, while most birds sold in the U.S. are now bred in captivity, unethical breeding facilities raise their own questions about the treatment of these intelligent wild animals.Perhaps the most alarming negative side effect from the pet bird craze has been its impact on wild bird populations. A case in point is the Spix’s macaw of Brazil, a species that was driven to extinction in the wild due to a combination of habitat loss and the capture of these magnificent parrots for the pet trade. However, this is only one of the most dramatic examples of a species driven to the brink by the bird pet industry. Many other birds–from parrots to cranes to songbirds–are in danger of suffering a similar fate, with some being sold for thousands of dollars to pet owners once taken from the wild. To save these species, it is necessary both that the public understand what is at stake, and that the unethical bird trade be cut off at its source.

While many of us dream of exotic or unconventional pets, it's essential to be aware of the laws and regulations governing pet ownership to ensure the safety of both the animals and ourselves. Some pets that are illegal to own in the United States include certain species of: 🚫 Primates: Monkeys and other non-human primates are prohibited in many states due to concerns about public safety and the welfare of these intelligent animals. 🚫 Big Cats: Lions, tigers, and other large feline species are often banned as pets due to their potential to pose a danger to humans and their specialized care needs. 🚫 Exotic Birds: Certain species of exotic birds, such as parrots and macaws, are restricted or prohibited in some states due to concerns about habitat destruction and the illegal wildlife trade. 🚫 Venomous Reptiles: Many states prohibit the ownership of venomous snakes and other reptiles due to the risk of injury or death from bites and the challenges of safely housing and caring for these animals. 🚫 Certain Fish Species: Some species of fish, such as piranhas and certain types of carp, are illegal to own in certain states due to concerns about their potential to disrupt local ecosystems if released into the wild. An expert committee constituted by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying issued a recommendation for banning certain ferocious breeds of dogs. FIAPO welcomes the recommendations as they hold the potential to prevent illegal breeding and sale; human-dog conflict; and cruelty against animals (an outcome of illegal breeding & sale). However, since only ‘terriers’ are mentioned in the letter — and some terrier breeds are mild-mannered — FIAPO wrote to the Joint Secretary and Commissioner of  Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying requesting clarification on which specific terrier breeds would come under the recommendation.  The second paragraph of the letter recommending certain dog breeds be banned, reads —"breeds (including mixed and cross breeds) like Pitbull Terrier, Tosa Inu, American Staffordshire Terrier, Fila Brasileiro, Dogo Argentino, American Bulldog, Boerboel, Kangal, Central Asian Shepherd Dog (ovcharka), Caucasian Shepherd Dog (ovcharka), South Russian Shepherd Dog (ovcharka), Tornjak, Sarplaninac, Japanese Tosa and Akita, Mastiffs (boerbulls), Rottweiler, Terriers, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Wolf dogs, Canario, Akbash dog, Moscow Guard dog, Cane corso and every dog of the type commonly known as a Ban Dog (or Bandog)." Here are some points from FIAPO’s letter to the committee: FIAPO pointed out that a blanket ban on all terrier dog breeds can lead to stigmatisation of the breed and negative sentiments towards other terrier breeds such as the Boston Terrier which is nicknamed ‘American Gentleman’ for their calm nature, or the Miniature Schnauzer which is known for their affectionate demeanour. The committee’s notification has caused panic and distress among the owners of terrier dogs that come from the docile terrier lineage. We urge the committee to kindly bring forth a clear list of specific terriers the breeding of which has to be banned. We urge the committee to kindly adopt a more nuanced approach towards the ban on terriers, and exemption to breeds such as Boston Terriers & Miniature Schnauzer that have a history of co-existing peacefully with humans. #companiondogs #terriers #illegalbreeding
