Are there any types of community events you are not seeing and, therefore, not adding to your Community Event Calendar? Sometimes, we get caught up in our own world and don't know another world happening right next door. Step out of your comfort zone and explore your community from different points of view to see what you may be missing. And ask lots of questions! Consider what different groups of people do and what types of events they are interested in. Some to start with: farmers, parents, artists, young professionals, economically diverse, culturally diverse, retired, business leaders, sports fanatics, craft beer aficionados, and the list goes on. Which one will you explore first? #youngprofessionals #communityevents #eventcalendar #comfortzone #businessleaders #sportsfanatic #craftbeer #lotsofquestions #groupofpeople #exploreyourcommunity #community

A week of wonder – week four Turning over the community chest Last Friday I spent a day at the Test Match watching England take on the West Indies - that is the noble game of cricket for readers who don’t know our wonderful summer sport. Don't worry this post isn't about cricket (apart from the picture below). On the way home I had the challenge of finding somewhere that served Thai food, not far off the motorway and in a certain timeframe. Long story short, I found a place called Ning’s Thai Kitchen in Blisworth not far from Northampton, roughly sixty miles north of London. As we drove into the village, we expected to find a Thai restaurant or maybe a pub that was serving Thai food. That wasn't what welcomed us at all. What we found was a reasonably large area of ground adjacent to a canal, filled with people sitting at assorted tables in families and groups of friends. They were eating Thai food, ordered from one hut and drinking their beer, ordered from the other hut. Fortunately it was a warm and dry night! So, we found a table and ordered. The food was freshly cooked and tasty and the beer was cold and refreshing. On its own that would have been great though probably not enough to write about. What made for an unexpectedly memorable final part of our day was discovering a sense of community that you could tangibly feel. Blisworth is a small village in the middle of the English countryside that you might not have any reason to visit. Yet stumbling into this place, I felt that we were being allowed to join a well established end of week custom where people came together to enjoy good food, good drink and good company. I’m a big believer in community. Forming a successful team is powerful. Organisations spend lots of time and money trying to work out how to make their teams work (though please can we retire the term 'high-performing teams' which now has become just another corporate speak term). Building networks is rightly growing in popularity these days. We built the successful PionAir network at Johnson Matthey. Yet I think we went further than a network and created a community which was far more powerful. The network had a job to do, people had roles and responsibilities, and they did those. The community went further. It meant people had trust in each other, even if they were in different countries and hadn't physically met. They developed relationships which meant trust and confidence in their colleagues. The dictionary definition of community talks of members often having a common cultural heritage, having something that binds them, possibly in unconscious ways. I sensed community last week at Blisworth. It was inspiring. What do you think community means? When have you been part of one? Incidentally according to its Facebook page, Ning’s Thai kitchen is only open on Fridays & Saturdays. It is worth making the trip if you can be there on one of those days! #inspiring #networks #community

We want you to spend more time in the House of Beautiful Business. And we want our #community and movement to grow. Enter: The House of Beautiful Business membership program! The new HoBB Membership not only offers you an opportunity to take part in more HoBB community events, but it also creates an opportunity for you to run more HoBB activities or programs (HoBBster activations) yourself. How does this work? As a HoBBster, you can produce and host HoBBster activations—learning journeys, conferences, workshops, masterclasses, retreats, and more—provided they are in keeping with our activation guidelines. The HoBB will endorse and promote these activations to the entire community. Fellow HoBBsters receive a 20% discount when they attend. We get a 10% cut from the total revenue generated by the HoBBster with their activation. As more events and programs take place, our community will become larger, livelier, and increasingly influential. The plan is to create more value for everyone. Learn more and become a HoBBster: https://lnkd.in/dUV8p6ct.

You would be surprised, we sure were! At Wine In A Million our membership grows because people want someone to drink wine with - without any judgement! Yep it's that simple. Niche communities are blossoming into powerful ecosystems where like-minded folks can just hangout together. My go-to community building approach would be Value-Driven Memberships REAL VALUE is the name of the game. Try building small first. Think smaller, close-knit groups within bigger networks. - Offer exclusive, well-researched & curated content, - Design personalised experiences - Introduce a concept or an idea to go with their current interest Members want to feel like they’re getting something truly special for being part of the club. So, how can businesses leverage this? 1. offer personalized value, 2. leveraging tech for better insights 3. and focus on member well-being. Most importantly, charge for this curated facilitation and use that money to experiment & improve the offerings. Stay adaptable and always look for ways to enhance the member experience. Drop in any thoughts or questions you have 👇 #CommunityBuilding
