The gaming industry is going through a lot right now. Despite many layoffs and openings, the hiring landscape this month seems quite chaotic. There are plenty of senior developers, but often they lack the right skill sets. Meanwhile, numerous junior and mid-level developers possess some relevant skills, but the job descriptions demand senior-level expertise. There are also positions labeled for interns or beginners that unrealistically expect 1-2 years of professional experience in specific languages like C++, Python, or JavaScript. Overall, the hiring requirements from companies are quite a mess. I've been searching for a position in the gaming industry for the past three months with no luck. As a mid-level developer skilled in C++ and particularly strong in Unreal Engine Blueprints, I find it challenging to secure a role focused on Unreal Engine with C++. There are definitely areas I can improve, but without feedback, it's tough to know where to start. What are your thoughts on this situation? #DevPenguinstream #UnrealEngine #UE4 #UE5 #Cplusplus #BlueprintScripting #GameDevelopment #GamingJobs

#gamedevcommunity - curious to know your thoughts if you're open to sharing: "We need this Engineer to have Unreal experience." I understand and respect this mandatory requirement. Hiring Managers want to bring someone on to their team who can hit the ground running with no ramp-up. However, is there an argument to be made here? Any time I speak with a programmer who has made a successful transition from Unity or a proprietary game engine over to UE, I try to ask them the same question: "how challenging was that transition from you?" It's a big question that gets a different response each time depending on the programmer's discipline and the actual purpose of the proprietary engine they've worked in, but the insight so many devs share lean towards a few points: Certain proprietary engines can require much longer of a ramp-up verses Unreal, which can be more intuitive / user-friendly. Is swapping C# for C++ the solve? No. It's more complex than that. Is moving from Unity to Unreal a tremendous mountain to climb? For most, it doesn't seem so. Does Unreal have limitations of it's own? Yes, but it depends on the nature of your project. Overall, most engineers who've made the transition, whether self-taught or through their studio, claim the ramp-up has taken anywhere from several weeks to a few months. Should there be flexibility to the "must have UE" requirement? #gamedevelopment #engineers #gamedeveloper

Yesterday, just before christmas eve, I got laid off. There are lots of people like me, numbers are unnerving. Unfortunately now, I'm looking for a new job in game dev. I was so happy with my recent one. I've worked as an AI Programmer on an unannounced project, I can not share the details of it but we can talk about the parts I've participated, implemented. Before that I've worked as an AI architect. I'm experienced with Game AI, looking opportunities in the Game AI field again. I have 3+ years of experince in Unreal Engine, 8+ years of experience in programming. I know raw C++ not just Unreal++. I've had much experience with Unity as well but I haven't double clicked on it in almost a year. I'm writing my PhD thesis at the moment. I have a good experience on Natural Computing and Game Theory. I'll update my CV if I could process what's happened. #gamedev #gameai #game-ai #open-to-work
