🌟 Reflecting on Friday's Incredible SPBA Event 🌟 A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined our Emerging Self-Funded Professionals Online Networking event last Friday! 🙌 Your active participation made it an enriching experience. Special gratitude to our guest speaker, Andrea Gambardella, SPBA Self-Funded Professional and Director of Operations at 90 Degree Benefits, CT (formerly Stirling Benefits). Andrea generously shared her inspiring career journey, from humble beginnings to her current role, offering valuable insights into both her triumphs and challenges. One key takeaway from Andrea's wisdom: "The most rewarding part of my job is keeping people engaged, ensuring we have the right talent, and making sure our team feels valued. Focus on your people, as everyone wants to feel heard and have a voice. Our industry is evolving rapidly, and to keep up, prioritize your people." She added, "Joining the SPBA Board has put me further down my journey, and I still feel I have so much more to learn; joining the Board has been a great place to start." Richard Hardin, SPBA Board member and President at Edison Health Solutions, extended a warm invitation to SPBA TPA members to join the Board. He emphasized the strength of friendships formed within SPBA. According to Richard, these connections are invaluable, serving as reliable resources and a supportive network. Richard shared, "SPBA is great for the content that Anne and her team provide. It's always been first class and never a concern about misinformation. The conversations between the sessions are important and I view fellow Board members as great friends who have supported me. The Board has been instrumental in my personal growth. There are a lot of lessons to learn and we can prevent a lot of mistakes from happening when building those relationships. Being able to call someone at SPBA with a question or a concern is invaluable." What a fun time I had at my very first Elevate conference with California Society of Association Executives (CalSAE)! Here are just a few of the highlights: - I got an inside peek into the minds of association executives - I had meaningful conversations with well over a dozen new colleagues and future friends, most of which were held at the sunny patio bar - I won not one but two prizes at the New Member orientation because I’m a raging nerd who also occasionally uses her Jedi powers to gain a competitive advantage - I signed up to volunteer with my regional Council so I can continue connecting and serving throughout the year (shout out to So Cal peeps!) - I caught up with old friends and Executive Directors I’ve worked with in the past - I danced my butt off at the 80s party (You Shook Me All Night Long was epic!) This organization is welcoming, fun, and filled with cool people in the association industry. I loved it. I walked in nervous, not knowing if I’d feel comfortable, and I’m walking out feeling like a member of the CalSAE family. If you are on the fence to join a community that’s calling to you because of nervousness or uncertainty, I encourage you to GO FOR IT! Don’t let fear or inertia stop you. Collaboration and strategic co-creation are waiting on the other side. Questions for member association executives? Most associations have “member engagement” as their top topic, concerns and strategic priorities… Obviously 🙄 But how do genuinely define member engagement and satisfaction? Question: Have you considered measuring, how satisfied are your most satisfied and engaged members? Are they content Are they gracious Are they fine Or do they say…”wellllll….!!! You gotta have a network right?!” But…Manny…what will this help us do…? Too many associations are focused on finding what is not working for 20% or 40% or 60% unengaged members [ just like a skier who is focused on trees on the skiing track ] Knowing the number of satisfied members and the reason for their satisfaction level can…. 1. Ensure consistent delivery of things that matter to your loyal members 2. Help you create a hypothesis behind what may or may not work for unengaged members. Now… These are data points you can use These define actions you can take These are experiences you can optimize Start simple Double down on what works But…do not shy away from shuffling things around ———————— So here’s another question for my peers who love our soceities like the ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership / the CSAE / the Texas Society of Association Executives… What do you value the most about your connection with these societies? This was better than I could have imagined kicking off Meeting Professionals International World Education Congress 🌟 Thanks to Visit Seattle, instead of the usual loud and crowded networking reception to kick off the week, we had a refreshing and energizing pickleball activation 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐦𝐞. 🏓✨ As someone who thrives in smaller, quieter settings, this early morning activity was a game-changer. Networking in groups of 2-4 allowed for meaningful conversations without the overwhelm of large crowds. It’s a fantastic alternative to the late-night Rendezvous party (which, let's be honest, can be tough for us early birds). What’s even better? This wasn’t just about pickleball. It could have been any small group activity like bocce ball, lawn bowling, Settlers of Catan, or even Cards Against Humanity. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲. One of my wider aims in 2024 is to support better collaboration between Health and Social Care finance teams, and I think one of the perfect platforms is through membership bodies like CIPFA/HFMA. Time to attend events and conferences seems harder to come by right now, so closer collaboration and condensing the social calendar seems like a possible solution which will help support this agenda. With this in mind, CIPFA midlands are running a networking event in Leicester on the evening of the 25th January for a few hours, and are keen to invite non-CIPFA members to attend to try and build relationships with leaders outside of their current networks.
