I provide African film industry intelligence and strategic consultation, with news, project tracking, data, expert insights, and analysis on various aspects of the film sector across African countries.
I hadn't thought much about there being a distinct wildlife film industry in Africa until this article... Courtesy of the Earth Island Journal: "Wildlife Filmmaking in Africa: Time to Decolonize," written by Kari Mutu. Key Points: - The wildlife film industry in Africa is primarily driven by Western filmmakers and caters to Western audiences. This perpetuates a focus on romanticized landscapes, "threatened paradise" narratives, and a lack of African involvement in the storytelling. - African voices are silenced, perpetuating the perception that Africans are disconnected from nature, or just don't care. - The current model reflects a legacy of colonialism, where wildlife and the lucrative film industry surrounding it are prioritized over the needs and perspectives of local communities. - Filmmaking is expensive, particularly wildlife filmmaking, making it difficult for Africans to break into the industry. It is a closed and exclusionary industry. - A growing number of African filmmakers and organizations are pushing for change, advocating for training and mentorship for African filmmakers; inclusive collaborations; making wildlife films accessible to African audiences, in their languages; and shifting narratives to reflect African perspectives and conservation efforts.

Reflecting on my journey in filmmaking within the field of conservation, I'm reminded of the incredible experiences that have shaped not only my career but also my perspective on the world around us. When I started on this path, I had no idea the extent to which it would lead me to new places, cultures, and connections. One of the most enriching aspects of this journey has been the people I've had the privilege to meet along the way. Through these experiences, I've learned that filmmaking is not just about telling stories but also about listening—listening to the voices of those who are often unheard. Every project has been a lesson and a reminder of the responsibility we hold as storytellers to advocate for change. Whether it's shedding light on endangered species or showcasing innovative conservation initiatives, I've come to see filmmaking as a powerful tool for inspiring action and fostering empathy. As I continue on this journey, I'm grateful for the opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute to the collective effort of conservation.🌱🎥🌍 #ConservationFilmmaking #CulturalDiversity #EnvironmentalAwareness #FilmmakerJourney #StorytellingForChange.

Leveraging Tree Surveys and Reports with Innovative Technology 🌳 Drone Pilot 🚁 Viral Photogrammetry Cookie Stealer | AI Enthusiast
I've spent 16 years trying to find my place in Arboriculture, here's what I have to share: Just because 'Arboricultural Consultant' is my title doesn’t mean I’m confined to trees. Trees aren't my only passion. Technology, innovation, content creation are probably bigger passions. I struggled with this for a long time. I felt like I didn't "fit" in the #arboriculture industry. An industry full of passionate tree people... and then, there was me 🤔 I was determined though. Determined to demonstrate that both passions can go hand in hand. It shaped my career journey. Sure there were, and still are, challenges. Some continue to dismiss my narrative, others embrace it. Some are even inspired 🙏🏼 If you're new to the industry, perhaps coming off the tools and into consultancy, or maybe looking to go it alone, this might help. Being an Arboricultural Consultant is what you make of it. It’s about leveraging all your skills and passions. I’m a drone enthusiast. A creative videographer. A business owner. A marketer. A tree surveyor. An administrative assistant. A client liaison manager. You don't need to be solely a tree lover to thrive in this industry. Your skills, media savvy, computer know-how all add immense value. Don’t box yourself in! Don't let anyone else deter you or box you in! The last two weeks shown in the 📼 are tesetemant to that. The arboriculture industry is vast, and there’s a place for all your talents 🚀🌳

Often, people want to know more about the conservation value, site context, and the wildlife that they share their property with, especially before fully committing to the full conservation easement process. Our team of GIS specialists and our knowledgeable biologists are trained to assess the conservation values of your property through both a desktop analysis and an in-person site visit. These tools allow us to not only gain an understanding of the geological and regional context of your property, but also enable our team to create a comprehensive species list and assessment of the features that make your property unique. We love to learn more about what landowners find the most important to them and what they find special about their land, so if you are interested in learning more about a site visit and about the easement process, reach out at info@nalt.org or by phone at: 610-388-3670.
