Ranchers and Astronauts... Athletes and Bakers.... Engineers and Educators ..what ties them all together? #STEM Education. Providing access to #stemeducation programs at an early age can change the narrative for rural communities. Typically, rural communities face unique challenges in accessing quality STEM education due to limited resources, geographic isolation, and a lack of exposure to STEM opportunities. However, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation STEM Center programs are fostering a strong connection between rural communities and STEM education. This is essential for promoting economic development, bridging the digital divide, and empowering the next generation with the skills needed for success in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. The Ripken Foundation's focus on community engagement, mentorship, and partnerships with local industries plays a pivotal role in nurturing STEM interest and proficiency among rural youth, that ultimately contributes to the progress and prosperity of students and their communities.

"Why should I do STEM activities with kids?" I often get and think about this question: Why should we do STEM activities with kids if not all of them are going to be scientists or engineers? Here is my reason. ⬇️ Why do you think doing STEM activities with all kids is important?

🦄 Effective STEM Education programs for students are not those that focus on the current "glamorous" technology. ✅ Effective STEM Education programs are those that focus on preparing the students for the unknown/ upcoming technologies of the future. 💡And that can happen only through a focus on First Principles Thinking and a hands-on approach, however fundamental they might seem at first glance. 🏫 If you are progressive school leader or parent who understands the value of this, get in touch with me to know more about how the STEMonsters programs can achieve just that. Applications for Ocean Odyssey grants are now open! Do you know a teacher or other educator who may want support for sharing ocean science and exploration with students? Ocean Odyssey grants fund projects that provide ocean-focused STEM education and/or early career development opportunities for middle school, high school, or college-aged youth from historically marginalized communities. This year, grants between $5,000 and $10,000 are available to fund ideas for innovative, immersive ocean education programming both inside and outside the classroom. Just a few examples of projects that could be eligible for Ocean Odyssey grants include: -Purchasing supplies for ocean science and exploration lessons in the classroom -Experiences such as field trips to collect ocean data -Subsidizing registration fees for students from historically marginalized communities to attend ocean-related STEM camps or trainings -Supporting professional development opportunities for teachers that help them share ocean science with students Applications for these grants, which are provided by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and NOAA Ocean Exploration, will be open through September 30, 2024. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) professions play a critical role in both the U.S. and global economies. According to the National Science Foundation (NSF), STEM workers make up a quarter of the U.S. workforce. The NSF research also shows that two-thirds of STEM workers are male, compared to a third being female, and that while there have been great gains in the past decade, the percentage of STEM workers who are Black, Hispanic, or representing other racial or ethnic groups still lags in comparison with the participation of those groups in other professions.
