The markets are closed today in honor of Juneteenth. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas. ISG, along with the entire United States Department of Defense, recognizes June 19, 2024 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, the commemoration and recognition of the end of African American slavery in the United States. While the Emancipation Proclamation had officially freed enslaved people more than two years prior, it wasn’t until the end of the Civil War that Union troops had the full strength to enforce General Order No. 3 in the once Confederate states, such as Texas. When U.S. Army General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, after the U.S. Civil War to issue General Order No. 3 and secure the Union Army's authority over Texas, he spoke not just of freedom but "an absolute equality of personal rights" for all former slaves. The emancipation of enslaved Black Americans was not the end of our work to deliver on the promise of equality — it was only the beginning. Juneteenth On June 19, 1865, Galveston, Texas, held a momentous celebration of freedom. Despite the Civil War's conclusion on April 9, 1865, slavery persisted in various states, with Texas being the final Confederate state to abolish the practice. The 135th US Colored Troops, which included my great-grandfather, played a pivotal role in paving the way for General Sherman's journey to Texas. General David Petraeus for President This is America. Voting is a privilege. Every American citizen should be equally free to vote. I am making myself a promise that I will take the privilege of voting much more seriously. I will be an informed voter. I will vote for candidates with real qualifications and great "doable" ideas for the future. One concern I have is that neither of the current assumed candidates have military backgrounds. In todays environment we need someone in the White House with military experience. We have had some great presidents with impressive military backgrounds. We need David Petraeus now. This is a picture of General Petraeus and me, Darrell Griffin. I have been asked if David is a Democrat or a Republican. After much research I don't know. Socially I think he leans Democrat and fiscally and military wise I think he leans Republican. What about town council and Mayor? If you don’t like their agenda or even lack thereof it’s not up to others to find a suitable person to run, rather it’s up to YOU. Remember, you don’t need political experience to run for a political position, in fact we have way TOO MUCH political experience in political positions. Do we agree?! If you plan on getting involved and helping your local and state situation between now and our national election in November, please share and always motivate others to get involved, as you lead the way! Do you know who your county Republican Chairman is? Find out and call them! Ask them where they need help and how you can help! On local office primary election day for local Republican offices here in New Hampshire, I’ll be standing outside with signs of those I feel are the most conservative with the best agenda for success. Our offices are closed today, Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in observance of the Juneteenth Holiday. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when a Union Army general arrived in Texas with 2,000 soldiers and informed over 250,000 Black Americans enslaved in Texas that slavery had been abolished following the conclusion of the Civil War.
