🔬 Check out the incredible work enabled by two recent GFI research grants 👇 🥩 With a $250,000 GFI research grant, University of Massachusetts Amherst food scientist Lutz Grossmann is recreating the marbling effect of animal fat in whole cuts of plant-based meat using a novel extrusion method that he says "has the potential to revolutionize the plant-based meat industry." Many people questioned why I and many others spent so much time working on the development of the EduSpots network over 💃 🥂 or making💰. It was because we could see the direct outcomes of the effort put in, and the significance of the change being created by and for remarkable human beings. We feel proud to share these output statistics from the last quarter in EduSpots - all driven through a 100% volunteer-driven model at the community level and a relatively low (streamlined!) organisational budget. And how do we achieve this? By bringing people together who are genuinely committed to a vision of enabling communities to come together to create the futures they want to see through education. Through investing in the development and growth of a network of 300 local Changemakers, believing in their potential to be social leaders regardless of their education experience, profession or age. The responsibility for change genuinely lies with the communities themselves, who have all played a pivotal role in the development of our model and grassroots network. 📈 We are looking forward to sharing the growth in the next quarter, and sharing further details on outcomes and evidence of impact at the end of 2024! 🥂 Kudos to all the Catalysts in EduSpots, whose efforts this reflects. Here at XCellR8, we’re always thinking about innovative ways to maximise our impact, to accelerate the world’s transition to 100% animal-free testing. We’re a small lab with a big dream and a hugely talented team of young scientists. But R&D is very expensive and our dreams are bigger than our budgets! 😊 To help make our ideas for animal-free, better science a reality, we’ve been lucky enough to receive funding from Innovate UK, the EU Horizon 2020 programme and Animal Aid. To help us do more, we’re launching our very first crowdfunding campaign to accelerate progress in our work to replace cruel and outdated LD50 tests with our in vitro models for human acute toxicity. 8,487,845 animals were used in animal experiments in the EU and Norway in 2022. Additionally, 862,884 animals were used for the development and maintenance of genetically modified lines—whose use in experiments is continuously increasing—bringing the total number of animals recorded in the EU statistics on the use of animals for scientific purposes to 9,340,729. The statistics does not even account for all animals, as animals killed for scientific purposes (such as for organ removal) and so-called surplus animals (those bred for experiments but not used and subsequently killed as "surplus") are not included. Therefore, the actual number of animals that died for animal testing is significantly higher than what the statistics suggests. The figures show a consistently high use of animals, aside from fluctuations, indicating that current efforts to reduce animal testing are failing. Even recognized animal-free methods approved by authorities are not being consistently implemented. https://lnkd.in/d8w5AMXy
