Well said, Ross Simmonds.
People often ask me what's my leadership style, and it's quite simple. I like to split my teams into two core areas: those who are great at strategising and those who are great at implementing. So I tend to split my teams into:
1. Strategists
2. Specialists
In fact, I usually have my team members undergo a personality style test (it's more focused on productivity than it is behavioural) called "Working Genius" by Patrick Lencioni. This tells me if they're going to be a strategist or a specialist.
This test basically tells me what people's strengths are or what they find passion in, and what people's weaknesses are or what they find frustration in. This test is based on the three phases of a project -- from ideation, to planning, to execution.
Based on a person's working genius, I can easily spot where they will bring the most value in. It also allows me to "put the right people in the right seats on the bus," as Jim Collins would say.
If they're more responsive, more doers, more "get it done" types of people, then they're specialists. If they're more assertive or disruptive, more creative, more planning types of people, then they're strategists.
Of course, not all of them fall neatly into these boxes. But predominantly, they do. And this allows me to architect my team in the same way you laid out, Ross Simmonds.
Love your post!
What’s the ideal mix for a distribution team?
We think it’s a combo of a producer and strategist. These two roles combined will give any brand producing high value content an advantage.
Most brands press publish and quit…
Smart brands realize that’s when the game begins.
