Every year seems to have its unexpected cinema savior, and the 2024 iteration seems to be Pixar Animation Studios's Inside Out 2. The film drove a massive surge of visits that surpassed the relatively quarterly impact of some of the biggest spring/early summer releases in recent years. Clearly, some of this is related to the relative downturn in visits YoY, but the excitement generated does speak to the potential for theatre chains to surprise - yet again - in 2024. What are your expectations for the theatre space in the second half of the year?

The British Film Institute (BFI) film and high-end television programme production in the UK, January to June ‘24 and year ending June ‘24, results are in … to summarise; • The combined total spend on film and high-end television (HETV) production in the UK for H1 2024 was £2.9 billion. • 72 films started shooting during H1 2024, 13 fewer than as reported for H1 2023. Total UK production spend for these films was £1,107 million, compared with £799 million as reported for H1 2023. Inward investment films accounted for £1,041 million, or 94%, of total UK spend on film production in H1 2024. • 176 films began principal photography during the July 2023 to June 2024 period, with total UK production spend of £1.6 billion – down 24% on the £2.1 billion recorded in the previous 12-month period. • For the latest 12-month period, inward investment films accounted for £1.3 billion, or 83%, of the total UK production spend on film. • Spend on UK domestic features was £164 million, or 10% of the total UK production spend on film, up from £147 million reported for the previous 12-month period. Co-production films had a UK spend of £108 million (7% of the total), which is the highest figure for the past decade. • 93 HETV productions began principal photography in H1 2024 with a total UK spend of £1.8 billion, an increase from £1.7 billion as reported for H1 2023. • UK spend on HETV inward investment was £1,463 million (82% of the total) in H1 2024. Domestic productions accounted for £324 million (18% of the total) and co productions £8 million (less than 1%). • 167 HETV productions started principal photography during the July 2023 to June 2024 period, 59 fewer than in the previous 12-month period. Total HETV UK production spend was £2.7 billion for the 12-month period.
