”Hello Trine, Congratulations on being nominated for the Earthshot Prize 2024!” Evening on a Friday night in Copenhagen – celebrating the theme of ‘hope’ in connection to Rodinia Generation‘s nomination for this year’s The Earthshot Prize ! Anyone who is building, helped built, or is dreaming about building a company who sees itself as a vehicle with a cargo that serves a greater purpose, will probably be just as ecstatic as I was about the following statement: ”The Earthshot Prize has been designed to find and grow the solutions that will repair our planet this decade. We face our greatest challenge; to regenerate the place we all call home in the next ten years. We believe in the power of human ingenuity to prove to us all that the seemingly impossible is possible.” Today, we know the fashion industry accounts for more than 8% of the world’s combined CO2e whilst being one of the main polluters of freshwater, but there was a time – not long ago – when people with opinions about climate change were ridiculed as ‘necklace-leaf loving doomsday preachers’ (I should know, I took some hits). In other words: the first step towards change is to acknowledge that there is a problem: Clip to year 2011 memory-lane, when the experts thought ‘sustainable fashion’ was a fad, short-lived trend, or as we call it in Denmark: a 24-hour-fly. A tutor told me: “sustainability is like the pantone color ‘orange’; must-have today, forgotten tomorrow”. Clip to present time; had my tutor been a true fortuneteller, the state of our planet year 2024 would have seen no need of an innovative, waterfree and carbon-reducing fashion production technology nor proof of customers or partners who would find it worth their time. Conclusion: tutors are not fortunetellers (at least not this one) Definitely no longer in 2011 – The Earthshot Prize is probably one of the greatest examples of this: already a global movement, with an international stage for good things to take-off, I’m sure other ‘Bob-the-builder’ types like myself are just as ecstatic about the bare existence of this rocket-ramp. Love this. Most of us need hope to encourage us to change. And certainly our kids should hear this from Hannah Ritchie - when we zoom out, we really see how we can make this a better sustainable world. Humans have achieved so much and yes there are many problems but Hannah shows us through data that we can have conditional optimism (or is it impatient optimism). Highly recommend her book ‘Not the end of the world’ - how we can be the first generation to build a sustainable planet. She is particularly good at focusing on what we shouldn’t worrying about and what we should. Eg it’s what we eat not how far it’s travelled that matters. If you wanted a reason to fight for our planet Hannah gives us the facts and inspiration. There’s obviously so much for Real Estate to do but we can have impatient optimism.
