In my world of DEI, our mindset has been shifting from empathy to compassion, Here's why: 1️⃣From Understanding to Action: Empathy says, "I see you." Compassion says, "I see you, and I'm here to help." It's the difference between acknowledging injustice and actively working to rectify it. 2️⃣Empowerment Amplified: Compassion isn't just about feeling for someone; it's about standing with them. It involves amplifying marginalized voices, championing their causes, and creating spaces where they can thrive unapologetically. 3️⃣Authentic Connection: Compassion forges bonds that transcend superficial understanding. It's about genuinely caring for the well-being of others and being willing to challenge our own biases and privileges in the process. 4️⃣Sustainable Change: While empathy may spark momentary solidarity, compassion ignites sustained efforts for systemic change. It's the fuel that drives us to confront uncomfortable truths, advocate for policy reform, and strive for a more equitable future. 5️⃣Unity in Diversity: Compassion recognizes that our differences are not obstacles but opportunities for growth. It celebrates diversity as the heartbeat of humanity and acknowledges that true unity can only be achieved through inclusive compassion. #compassion #empathy #dei #movement #RodVisionInMotion

Rodney, I also believe compassion is the driver of action, yet I wonder (I truly don't know) if empathy isn't the foundation on which it is built. Can you reach a compassionate level without first experiencing empathy? I do like Daniel Goleman's description of 3 types of empathy he feels are essential for effective leaders in developing emotional intelligence: Cognitive, Emotional and Empathetic Concern (which leads people to take action). Then there are the 4 A's of (Customer) Empathy: Awareness, Acknowledgement, Action and Advocacy. Here is the synergy of what we're looking to achieve with accomplishing effective DEI. I don't think we want (or need) to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I really appreciate your explaining this difference - it is as important at work as it is between a couple, a family, friends... I think a lot of emphasis has been placed in more recent times on whether people are empathic or not, rather than taking that next step and ensuring that actions are taken toward authentic connection. 😍

I love your post Rodney. I wonder whether it is possible to have true compassion towards others if you do not practice self-compassion? If I'm judging my own behaviour/ feelings/ others differences, ....., (often at an unconscious level), can I really be fully available for another? The more self-awareness and self-compassion we have, the more space we create to experience compassion for others suffering.
