Today (30 November) sees the final of the Copa Libertadores - the South American equivalent of the UEFA Champions League - taking place at River Plate’s Monumental de Núñez stadium in Buenos Aires. Happily it is an afternoon kick-off in Argentina so in the UK you can watch the full match live on BBC 3 or the iPlayer from 20.00. Hosts Argentina will be a neutral bystander today, as the two finalists are once again from Brazil. Rio’s Botafogo and Belo Horizonte’s Clube Atlético Mineiro. This is Atlético-MG's second shot at the South American title, having captured its first Libertadores title in 2013. For Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas it is a Libertadores final for the first time. It is the fourth all-Brazilian CONMEBOL (Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol) Libertadores final in the last five years, and ten of the twelve clubs to have disputed the final since 2019 have been Brazilian. Argentina’s River Plate was the last non-Brazilian club to win the competition in 2018. Rio’s Fluminense is the current champion.

South American Dreams. 📊⚽️ We begin a series of articles on young South American talents with two names: one Argentinian, who has already been talked about for some time, and a somewhat hidden Brazilian player who, in our opinion, is worth the price of admission. Franco Mastantuono, a 16-year-old left-footed talent from River Plate, embodies pure South American class in all aspects. Last night, in front of 80,000 spectators at the Mas Monumental, he scored a free-kick goal two minutes from the end, securing River's victory over Sarmiento in the Liga Profesional championship. The free kick was reminiscent of Lionel Messi, and in Argentina, as usual, there are musings about him inheriting the mantle of the best player in recent history. Possessing a frighteningly quick burst of acceleration with the ball at his feet, he reminds us entirely of Messi's characteristics. This season, he has already made three appearances in the Copa Libertadores with one goal, and eight appearances in the league with one goal and one assist. We're talking about a sixteen-year-old who, for example, would never play in the first team in Italy. His value increases day by day (today, according to the Transfermarkt website, he is worth 10 million euros, and who knows what tomorrow holds). The question is: will he end up, as usual, at Real Madrid, Barcelona, or Manchester City, or has some savvy scout from another team already had their eye on him in previous years? Unfortunately, it seems that the market driven by intuition and scouting talent no longer exists. We shall see. Surely, Franco Mastantuono will make headlines. In Brazil, a player we really like is Breno Bidon, a 19-year-old from Corinthians, a mix between Kroos, Modric, and Dunga. He possesses exceptional vision and physical strength in defense. If you look at the heat map of his matches, the entire field is practically colored. He has made 14 appearances in the current Brazilian championship (out of 16 matches), often playing the full game. A player currently valued at 5 million euros (according to Transfermarkt), he is someone to keep a close eye on. Breno Bidon is also already on the radar of many European teams, and we will soon see who will secure his signature.
