This Easter long weekend, my family had the fortune of experiencing something truly breathtaking—a large pod of over 50 dolphins gracefully diving through the waves right before our eyes. It was an incredible sight that left us in awe, a beautiful reminder of how effortlessly special nature's is. Reflecting on this video, I couldn't help but draw parallels to the world of business. Like a pod of dolphins navigating the ocean, businesses too face their own waves—challenges and obstacles that seem insurmountable at times. Yet, just as dolphins dive through the waves with agility and poise, we too can overcome these challenges with teamwork, perseverance, and innovation. Seeing those dolphins in action reinforced my belief that no matter how big the wave, there's always a way through it. It's about moving forward with purpose and excitement, embracing the ups and downs, and coming out stronger on the other side. Let's take inspiration from these magnificent creatures and tackle our business challenges with the same grace, teamwork, and determination. Just as a pod of dolphins relies on each other to navigate the ocean, we can achieve remarkable things by working together, sharing our strengths, and pushing through the waves of challenge with confidence. Even if you are in small business like me, lean on your ‘competitors’ for support you might just be surprised at how willing they are to work with you and cheer you on.. often they are the ones who know the challenges you’re going through the best. Can you be a sailmaker by training and a successful chairman of the board in a large family business? I could. Others surely can too. Should they? It depends ... When I became involved in managing my family’s business, I had been running a sail loft in Norway. I was a sailmaker with employees and customers. I was also someone who knew the values of my family’s business and ‘the business that the business was in’ since the company had been a part of my life since childhood. What I was not: Someone with an MBA and the kind of experience you gain from moving up the career ladder in the places you read about in #Forbes. But I was given a chance. Someone might say: "Yes, you were given a chance because your father owned the business." It’s true. I was given the chance because we believed in the value of strong family involvement – and because my father had faith it his decision. And believe me, the company was like a baby to him. He would not knowingly have risked its survival or success to put me in the lead, even though I was his child. All in all, I feel like I can say that I did more than okay: As the chair, I headed the company and its managers and employees through a turnaround and what would by all accounts become a successful sale. The take-away for me? Being family means that you know each other’s strengths and weaknesses well. And it often means that you share values, in-depth knowledge, and a passion for the business – as well as a strong sense of loyalty towards it. These are some of the factors that may allow your family to find you suitable for a leading role, even if that role would normally require a specific set of formal qualifications in a large non-family business.
