For #NationalInternDay, I want to share a few highlights from the great conversation I had with our MassMutual summer interns at our Springfield office last week. This group represents the innovative spirit of our future leaders, and their insightful questions gave me the chance to share a few lessons that I’ve learned along my journey at the company: 💡 Build a personal board of directors – such as trusted friends, family, and colleagues – to gain diverse perspectives and help you navigate challenges. 💡Become an expert in at least one area where you can be the “go to” person. 💡Show up, work hard, and seize every opportunity that comes your way. What other advice would you share with our intern class?
- Never compromise your values - Listen more, talk less - Know when to say yes and, importantly, when to say no Congrats to our future leaders🎉
- If you're the smartest, most talented person in your group....you're in the wrong group. Surround yourself with people smarter than you and think differently than you. Learn from them, and partner with them to solve challenges. - "Competence" is a journey, not a destination. As soon as you believe you've "learned everything you need to know", you've failed. Ask yourself each day: "What challenged me today to think differently?" - Leadership is not signified by a title, it's identified through behaviors. Be a leader each day of your life, not just in your career. Contribute meaningfully to your family, friends, and community. Most of us don't have a title of "VP of Smiles" in our neighborhood, yet we smile to others without being asked, bringing joy and positive vibes. Bring that same energy to work each day....be someone that brings joy, good vibes, and curiosity to each task. That infectious behavior will signal "leader" without a title.
💡Find a great mentor. Ask questions, listen, watch and be receptive to feedback … even the tough to hear stuff. 💡Be curious and push to understand the “why” behind processes. If something doesn’t make sense, challenge the status quo 💡Treat everyone with the respect they deserve, regardless of their title. It takes the whole team to deliver a quality product.
Stay curious, ask questions. Use your internship to find out as much as you can about your industry, potential career path and the overall lifestyle of those that work in the field. Getting to know the work culture can help you feel a part of the organization and make you feel more comfortable as an intern. Good luck!

Great advice, Roger. I’d add that an internship is as much of a learning experience for leaders as it is for interns, so don’t be afraid to share your perspectives. You may end up influencing a new way of thinking or impressing a leader enough to get a future job.
Be committed to doing hard things. That’s when we grow!
