This short little video explains the value of #hedgerows on farms. There are so many benefits, including protecting the soil from erosion, building biodiversity, and sequestering carbon. In fact, research shows hedgerows sequester carbon about 36% more effectively than adjacent farmland, regardless of soil types! That's super helpful for #climatechangemitigation. Plus, hedgerows are beautiful and attract birds, beneficial insects, and other wildlife. Funding is available for #Californiafarmers to plant hedgerows with #nativeplants. We'll be sharing more #farmergrant opportunities in the new year. Stay tuned! Kevin has invented a honeybee nest box that’s the only self-regulating honey harvesting system in the world, meaning the bees will dictate how much honey you can take dependent on the environment that year. Smothering accounts for around 21% of deaths in laying hens. But why do hens smother? And what can be done to tackle this industry-wide challenge? Understanding the causes and consequences of this behaviour is the aim of SmotherSense, a BBSRC-funded collaborative research project with The Lakes Free Range Egg Company and Newcastle University. Using data from FAI’s innovative farm management system BirdBox, the study shows piling, the clustering of large densities of birds which can lead to smothering, is more common than anticipated. It can also affect production, even without smothering-related deaths. We are now exploring the development of a novel BirdBox alert to indicate when flocks are at increased risk of smothering.
