When a family and its assets are primarily located within a single country, a centralised, domestic approach to structuring and operations is typically effective. However, as families expand across borders, whether strategically or incidentally, the complexity of managing private wealth increases significantly, often necessitating a multi-jurisdictional approach. This can also be advantageous, as it leverages the benefits of various jurisdictions to access specialist expertise / services and optimise asset protection and tax efficiency. In my experience, many global families find a multi-jurisdictional strategy to be effective. This may involve conducting day-to-day operations from an onshore or midshore jurisdiction whilst simultaneously structuring strategic assets in offshore jurisdictions. This bifurcated approach is discussed further in my recent article published by IFC Review in its Family Office feature. What isn't discussed in the article but is critically important is having an independent strategist to design the architecture and co-ordinate the global team.
