Exploring the February 6, 2023 Earthquakes: A Comprehensive Study Unraveling Their Source Mechanics
On February 6, 2023, southeast Turkey was struck by two major earthquakes with magnitudes Mw 7.8 and Mw 7.7. Our comprehensive study, conducted by Profs. Altunel, Pınar, Erdik and Akkar, provides an in-depth analysis of their causes and consequences, offering insights on the rupture mechanics of these events.
🔍 Key Findings:
The Mw 7.8 quake increased the surcharge stress that contributed to the Mw 7.7 quake, demonstrating complex fault dynamics.
The role and kinematic interaction of the East Anatolian Fault Zone to understanding the occurrence of these events.
Check out the full report for an in-depth look at earthquakes' faults, mechanisms, and historical context.
