This 4th of July, we celebrate the values of citizenship, freedom, justice, and neighborliness. We feel such gratitude for the folks at Refugee and Immigrant Connections Spokane, Manzanita House, Feast World Kitchen, and the many other community organizations and partners who support our newest neighbors from all over the world! 🌍🇺🇸 We had the opportunity to film part of World Refugee Day, including the naturalization ceremony amid wild winds and thundering rain; the joy and pride shone through! 🌦️ A special shoutout goes to artist Jiemei Lin for creating the beautiful World Refugee Day logo, along with so many lovely murals around the Spokane Region! 😍 #CelebratingCitizenship #WorldRefugeeDay #IndependenceDay

In the spirit of the Jesuit tradition, we are all called to be active participants in a world that urgently needs compassion and understanding. 🌍 The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) doesn’t just accompany and serve displaced persons and refugees; it also transforms the lives of those who serve, helping them discover deeper compassion and a renewed sense of purpose. It's no wonder many Jesuits complete their regency with JRS — it's a path that leads to profound personal growth and a deeper understanding of what it means to be truly human. Through their work with refugees, they experience the profound impact of making room for tenderness, compassion and generosity. In other words, they learn to love deeply. https://bit.ly/3B1w1CR 🤝 ❤️ ➡️ Curious about how you can accompany refugees and make a difference? 📘 Download JRS’s new guide, ON THE MOVE, and learn how you can advocate for marginalized communities and foster real change: https://bit.ly/3Tjc8NY

We become something together that we could never be apart. The impact of young people joining forces in a movement of change makers is truly transformative. When unique giftings and capabilities unite, they become game-changing forces, shaping history through combined efforts. Love Your City embodies this ethos as a global movement of local movements, where young individuals form "leagues of superheroes." These leagues venture into distressed neighborhoods, refugee camps, and slums, spreading hope and making a difference. #LoveYourCity #ChangeMakers #GlobalMovement

“#Safe Haven, initially known as Fort Ontario Emergency #Refugee Shelter, was #opened at the #order of President Franklin D. #Roosevelt in #August of 1944 and #housed as many as 982 #refugees, mostly #Jewish, through 1946. They #lived in four #barracks-style buildings on the #Fort Ontario grounds. The park service’s #suitability study also looked at such a #designation for all of Fort Ontario, a #military installation #built by the #British in 1755 and #held by the #Americans during the #Revolutionary War. In the end, the #parks service study found that only the #four buildings #associated with #Safe Haven met all the #criteria. Fort #Ontario is now a #state historic site. “This study finds that the #historic resources directly #associated with the Fort Ontario Emergency #Refugee Shelter ... #meet the #national significance criterion,” the study’s executive summary says. “#Fort Ontario was the #only European #refugee shelter in the #United States and #represents the nation’s #political approach to the #refugee crisis of #World War II, 20th-century #immigration policies, the #Roosevelt administration’s #reaction to #reports of the #Holocaust, and the #actions of the #War Refugee Board.”

For Refugee Week, we invite you to celebrate what #Compassion looks like in action. Together we can create a shared understanding of compassion to ensure we are extending it widely to all. Why compassion? The last few years have been challenging for all of us. We are still adjusting to new realities post-lockdown as well as responding to new crises. In the UK, dangerous anti-migration government rhetoric continues, along with inhumane conditions for #AsylumSeekers. But, none of these things happen in isolation. We know how interconnected our world is: how something seemingly “far away” impacts everyone. All of this makes us even more aware of the need to widen our circles of compassion. Within our own experiences are all the tools we must be compassionate, not just to ourselves and those in our immediate circle but to all our human neighbours and our one shared home, planet earth. I truly believe in standing by each other, not just lending a hand. We all need someone in our corner, cheering us on and helping us reach our dreams. It's about more than just helping – it's about supporting by believing in each other's abilities and giving each other the support we need to succeed. "Stop the Boats." … But What If We Stopped the Hate Instead? On this World Refugee Day, we must confront the harsh realities and harmful narratives surrounding refugees and migrants. In her powerful blog, Azza Essakhi reminds us how history and empathy often get sidelined in the face of nationalism and prejudice. As someone with a mixed heritage, Azza eloquently delves into how easily any of us could have been born into a life where fleeing is the only option. She asks the pressing question: Why do we allow history to repeat its mistakes when it comes to supporting those in desperate need? ⏩ Dive into Azza's blog and reflect on how we can learn from the past to create a more inclusive and humane future. Read it below 👇🏻 #WithRefugees #WorldRefugeeDay #HumanRights

Executive Recruitment Director. I believe in the Potential & Development of everyone. Open to Tangible International and National Opportunities
Forest Whitaker: “It is always possible to nurture hope away from home – and it is always a duty for us to ensure that refugees and displaced persons can be offered opportunities to have a place in the world, which is of benefit for all.” On #WorldRefugeeDay, I’m sharing this blog post to honor the countless stories of courage, hope, and resilience. As we mark this day, let’s pledge a collective commitment to supporting refugees’ journeys towards a better future. Together, we can build bridges of empathy and create spaces where hope flourishes, no matter how far from home one may be. https://lnkd.in/ef4naqDU
