Peatland experts working together with the National Trust at Marsden Moor in West Yorkshire have found that the moor’s peat stores at least one million tonnes of carbon. They say it’s further evidence that peatlands can play a crucial role in tackling climate change. #peatland #marsdenmoor #carbonstorage #climatechange #environment

Please share your thoughts on climate pollution!
MVRPC is developing a Comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CCAP) to address climate pollution and create a healthier future for our region. We'd appreciate your input by taking part in a survey available at https://lnkd.in/gFS_bQPP. Your perspective on this survey will help MVRPC to better understand your priorities and needs. The deadline to complete the survey is September 6, 2024.

A study of the #TealCarbon conducts a global meta-analysis to assess the benefits of #wetlandrestoration in terms of net ecosystem carbon and #greenhousegas balance. https://lnkd.in/gjT5vZ-U Restoration of degraded #wetlands is increasingly seen as a natural climate solution, but the time required for degraded wetlands to transition from carbon sources to sinks is uncertain. Additionally, increased #methane and nitrous oxide emissions from restored wetlands may complicate their climate benefits. Most studies focused on peatlands in the northern hemisphere, while the effects of restoration in non-peat wetlands remain understudied. Results showed that despite higher methane emissions, most restored and all natural peatlands were net carbon sinks, whereas most degraded peatlands were #carbon sources. However, the time for restored wetlands to have a net cooling effect on the #climate exceeded the timeframe set by the Paris Agreement #parisagreement . Therefore, #conservation and protection of existing natural freshwater wetlands should be prioritized over restoration efforts for effective climate change mitigation.

When it comes to #climateaction we can't afford to be single-minded. An over-emphasis on removing carbon from the atmosphere could undercut vital support for actions to avoid further emissions, and vice-versa. Great post from ACR at Winrock International's Andrew Taylor on the scientific evidence behind our need to continue focusing on solutions that halt emissions in their tracks and help society quit digging itself into a deeper 'climate hole'. A diverse portfolio of solutions including both emission avoidance and removal activities is crucial to meeting our #climate goals. #CarbonMarkets have the power to unlock the finance and resources to catalyze action across both solution sets across numerous industries. ACR is a leading global carbon crediting program operating in global compliance and the #voluntarycarbonmarkets pioneering new approaches to make ambitious climate results possible. https://lnkd.in/dZjtcCEW
🌎 For the atmosphere’s balance sheet, emission reductions and removals are equivalent. Both are vitally important. 🌲 A recent peer-reviewed study in Nature Climate Change reinforces this point, finding that the four pathways with the highest scientific confidence and the largest potential scale of global impact are tropical forest reforestation, tropical forest avoided loss, temperate forest reforestation and temperate forest avoided loss. In other words, reforestation (removals) and avoided loss (reductions) are both critical climate actions. https://lnkd.in/dnWxRz4B

🌍 On this Earth Day, let's shift our focus to an often-overlooked hero in the fight against climate change: peatlands 🌿 Did you know these landscapes cover 3% of the Earth's surface and have the potential to store twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests combined? Yet, they face exploitation and lack of awareness. Our recent session at the Market Research Society (MRS) Annual Conference delved into the importance of peatlands and how to communicate their significance effectively! Discover the insights from the conference and how we're reshaping the narrative on peatlands and contributing to climate action in an article by Research Live here: https://hubs.ly/Q02tzFt50 #Sustainability #ClimateAction #Peatlands #NatureRestoration #EarthDay
